Should you be considering a ramble in the woods this season, Dior’s spring runway suggests the look at left. (Should you not, we personally will be wearing it to the produce section at Whole Foods and Instagramming like it’s the Amazon.) The whole picture is simply striking (the flick of matte black liner), flawlessly executed (the glossiest of braids), and masterfully accessorized (just-frayed-enough, face-framing straw). I wear the same gloss every day [because] I’m constantly drinking matcha or licking my lips. For this look, makeup artist Linda Gradin left frozen raspberries and blueberries out at room temperature, dipping her brush in the juice as they melted. Gradin moisturized the skin with Alba Botanica Un-Petroleum Jelly to “make the pigments easier to spread,” she says. Using retinol is a little like learning how to drive a stick shift: There are a lot of fits and starts, and it can be incredibly irritating. But once you get it, you never want to give it up. Now brands are introducing retinol alternatives—natural oils from plants rich in vitamin A—with less potential for flaking. But do they work? “No. I wish,” says New York City dermatologist Dendy Engelman.
