Is it me, or is it time we got rid of the conventional photographic genres?
You know, landscape, street, nude, portraiture, still life, abstract, documentary and so on. They, of course, were mostly nicked from the art world, who then added ‘movements’ like Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Dadaism, Fauvism – the list is almost endless. Photographers, who were rather self-conscious about making images with a machine, created Pictorialism 100 years ago so their images looked more like paintings than ‘straight’ photographs.
Photography is unique and it is the approach we take that is important, not the generic compartment we think we should be photographing in. Compartments are for trains, not photography.
