The hacking misdeeds were described in a New York Times story based on the findings of Hold Security, a Milwaukee firm that has a history of uncovering online security breaches. Sprint’s new owner is replacing its longtime CEO after dropping its bid for rival wireless carrier T-Mobile US Marcelo Claure, the CEO of cellphone distributor Brightstar, will replace Dan Hesse on Monday, Sprint Corp. said Wednesday. Microsoft said Friday it is suing Samsung for threatening to stop paying Microsoft royalties for patents behind the Android operating system. The two companies came to a deal in September 2011 to cross-license each other’s patent portfolios. Samsung wound up paying Microsoft royalties on a series of patents. Analyst RickSherlund of Nomura Securities has estimated royalties on its Android patents bring Microsoft nearly $2 billion a year. Gannett is splitting its broadcast and publishing business in two, joining other major media players in allowing fast growing TV and digital operations to operate more freely and not be weighed down by the declining newspaper business. The media company also announced Tuesday that it would take full ownership of Cars.com for $1.8 billion. Professional networking service Linkedln has agreed to pay nearly $6 million in unpaid wages and damages to 359 current and former employees, the Labor Department said on Monday. The U.S. Department of Labor said an investigation found Linkedln Corp. in violation of overtime and record-keeping rules that are part of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. It said the violations occurred at company branches in California, Illinois, Nebraska and New York. Xiaomi, a Chinese handset maker little known in the West, overtook tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. to become China’s top-selling smartphone brand in the second quarter, a market research company said Tuesday. According to Canalys, Xiaomi sold 15 million smartphones in China during the second quarter, more than a three-fold surge from a year earlier. It surpassed Samsung, which had the leading position in China for more than two years, as well as local brands such as Lenovo and Huawei.
