The worldwide smartphone market reached yet another milestone, having shipped one billion units in a single year for the first time. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 1,004.2 million smartphones worldwide, up 38.4% from the 725.3 million units in 2012. This aligns with IDC’s most recent forecast of 1,010.4 million units, making for a difference of less than 1%. Smartphones accounted for 55.1% of all mobile phone shipments in 2013, up from the 41.7% of all mobile phone shipments in 2012. Google is selling Motorola Mobility’s smartphone business to Lenovo Group for $2.9 billion. The deal announced Wednesday will rid Google Inc. of a financial headache that has plagued the company since buying Motorola Mobility for $12.4 billion in 2012. Motorola has lost nearly $2 billion since Google took over in May 2012 while trimming its workforce from 20,000 to 3,800. The U.S. government and leading Internet companies on Monday announced a compromise that will allow those companies to reveal more information about how often they are ordered to turn over customer information to the government in national security investigations. The Justice Department reached agreements with Google Inc., Microsoft Corp., Yahoo Inc., Facebook Inc. and Linkedln Corp. that would resolve those companies’ legal challenges before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. Hotel guests may soon be able to bypass the check-in counter and unlock their rooms with digital keys sent to an app on their iPhones, one hotel chain says. The pilot program is being tested at two Aloft boutique hotels in the Starwood hospitality chain — one in Manhattan’s Harlem neighborhood and another in Apple’s native Cupertino in California, Applelnsider reported Monday. Room locks at the hotels will use Bluetooth proximity keys, similar to the Bluetoothbased consumer locksets that have appeared on the market.
