Few award-winning designers would compare their latest creations to a classic children’s toy, but Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer of Raw-Edges have always possessed a certain insouciant genius. Think of the husband-and-wife team’s wall-mounted cabinet for Arco that folds open like a toolbox. Or the cork pendant light for Materia Amorim that allows consumers to attach homemade paper shades with pushpins. IT ALL STARTED with a table leg. “I was sanding the form, preparing to cast it in aluminum, and felt totally connected with my creative side,” recalls Ini Archibong of his eureka moment as a student at Pasadena’s ArtCenter College of Design. “I was outside the computer, shaping something myself.” Now based in Switzerland, the Nigerian-American designer continues to apply his hand to sculptural creations, among them a stirrup-shaped watch for Hermès and assorted furniture collections. Three years ago, his work caught the eye of Pavlo Schtakleff, cofounder of the furniture company Sé, then on the hunt for fresh talent. “We sent him a brief, and what he sent back was exactly right,” says Schtakleff, who has been collaborating with Archibong ever since. In 1989, lighting designer Robert Sonneman had a vision. He imagined a modular lighting system of interconnected elements and suspended lights that could be customized as individual sconces or constructed as one-tiered sculptures with endless configurations. But Sonneman’s idea was ahead of its time—it would take decades to turn his dream into reality. Enter LED technology and the availability of a low-voltage, high-performance electrical system, which enabled Sonneman’s idea to come to life as the Suspenders lighting system. After moving to Mexico in the mid-1930s, Cuban designer Clara Porset began researching the furniture of the region—and one low wooden chair captured her interest. The butaque, a Colonial-era hybrid of Spanish X-frame chairs and pre-Columbian ritual duhos, appeared in late–16th century Venezuela and proliferated across trade routes from New Orleans to Havana. When the port city of Campeche, Mexico, became a hub of production, the seat made its way to the U.S., where it was called the Campeche (or Campeachy) chair and counted Thomas Jefferson among its fans. The former president acquired one in 1819 and had it copied and adapted. Monticello, Jefferson’s house-museum, sells a reproduction of one of the versions he owned. “We often overlook the importance of lighting. We see the object it illuminates without thinking about the light falling on that object.” So explains artist Olafur Eliasson, who, throughout much of his career, has counteracted that impulse through immersive installations—from his 2003 Tate Modern commission, The Weather Project, which simulated a giant sun, to his rainbow panorama atop Denmark’s ARoS Aarhus Art Museum.
