As our borders open, we offer you, as always, the latest art exhibitions and events as well as art services and artist opportunities across the country. For many of us, each new year marks a chance for renewal, and 2021 is no exception. In this issue, Emma-Kate Wilson explores the fragility and resilience of ecosystems and the cycle of life in ‘The Garden’, a new body of work by Laura Jones that sprouts from the devastation of the Black Sunday bushfires, remembering the beauty of nature and the hope of regrowth. Artist Marco Luccio is spreading a message of love, hope and trust in the City of Melbourne and out to broader communities with ‘The Albatross Project’. During the challenging times of COVID-19 Luccio wanted to reach out to people grappling with the difficulties of the pandemic with an uplifting and meaningful gesture. And so, in collaboration with Rock Posters, Australia’s largest street poster network, he designed an etching of two albatross birds lovingly touching beaks and united by the words LOVE, HOPE, TRUST. The inaugural ‘Art Textile Biennale’ presented by Fibre Arts Australia celebrates contemporary textile practice with a touring exhibition. An extraordinary display of artworks made with cloth, fibre and stitching across traditional and non-traditional art textile techniques showcases a diverse range of stories from intimate personal reflections to current and pressing environmental concerns by 29 artists from 16 countries including Australia. ‘PHOTO 2021’ is a brand new international festival of photography. Originally scheduled to run in April 2020, the festival’s destiny took a turn during Covid-19 and will be inaugurating the showcase from 18 February to 7 March with a series of free events across multiple venues from the streets and galleries of Melbourne to regional Victoria. ‘PHOTO 2021’ includes online public programs across the ‘Photo Live’ and ‘Photo Ideas’ channels, as well as a number of outdoor commissions presented by virtual tour opening the festival up to global audiences. Opening one year on from the start of the tragic bushfires, Laura Jones’ exhibition ‘The Garden’ at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum explores the tension that was left behind in vivid, gestural paintings. This series of works began as Jones navigated the Hawkesbury, Ku-ring-gai and Blue Mountains regions after the destruction of the fires. Observing the landscape, ‘The Garden’ muses on 2020 – from the devastation that directly affected her close family to time in lockdown during COVID. Finding a sense of reflection from this concentration alone time, Jones approaches the exhibition in Manly with fresh energy. The second iteration of the ‘NGV Triennial’ explores some of the most globally relevant and pressing issues of our time, including isolation, representation and speculation on the future. ACE Open’s Porter Street Commission Recipient ACE Open recently announced the recipient of the inaugural ‘Porter Street Commission’, South Australian artist Bridget Currie. Currie was awarded $20,000 from the Porter Street Fund to support the development and production of an ambitious new work as part of ACE Open’s 2021 exhibitions program.
