This issue is filled with exhibitions that discover and re-discover contemporary and historical art through collections and archive-based exhibitions to interpret and re-interpret known histories and practices; reveal the lesser-known histories and practices; and bridge the gaps between artist and artwork, audience connection and understanding. Art collective Barabara Cleveland delve into their fifteen-year archive to present a commentary on female friendship, collaboration, and artistic labour. We look at the brief but influential oeuvre of Philippa Cullen that enacted a new synergy between dance, contemporary art, performance, and technology, as well as a new form of communication. Blackwood River Arts Trail

Celebrating the arts in the heart of Western Australia's southwest, the Blackwood River Arts Trail features nearly seventy artists, including painters Miranda Free, Lori Pensini and Josh Windram, sculptor Kim Perrier, and wood-firing ceramicist Cher Shackleton, opening their studios and presenting group exhibitions in cafes, wineries, sculpture gardens, gift shops, and local galleries from 1 to 16 April. Discover local art and explore a multifaceted region. With rolling hills, forests, and the Blackwood River, the area is dotted with small villages and local food and wine experiences. Metro Gallery > Lennox St. Gallery

After twenty-one years at 1214 High Street in Armadale, Melbourne, Metro Gallery are heading south to 322–324 Lennox Street in Richmond, with the move launching a rebranding as Lennox St. Gallery. The new name acknowledges the buzzy location in the heart of Richmond's arts precinct. The building's new façade pays homage to previous occupants Hellas Cakes' original Lennox Street frontage, while the gallery's interior will preserve original aspects such as a conversion of the former walk-in fridge into the director's office. 100 faces Monash Gallery of Art Until 28 May 2023 Melbourne 100 faces brings together three significant photographic collections to explore the many faces of the portrait and what it means to collect portraiture both publicly and privately. Through the lenses of over fifty artists from the 1860s to the present, including our cover artist Ruth Maddison, 100 faces encompasses a range of styles and approaches, including studio portraiture as well as street photography, posed and unstaged – from celebrities and cultural figures to anonymous individuals, the still and uncomfortable to the relaxed and candid, the well-dressed to the undressed. Parrtjima

Parrtjima – A Festival in Light returns to Mparntwe/Alice Springs from 7 to 16 April, showcasing the oldest continuous cultures on Earth through the newest technology against the backdrop of the incredible MacDonnell Ranges – a 300-million-year-old natural canvas. This year's theme, ‘Listening with Heart', embodies the concept of coming together, meeting and taking the time to contemplate, reflect and heal. Art Boards Australia

Art Boards Australia provides a surface for every artist. Located in Melbourne, Art Boards Australia was born out of frustration in 2012 when Scott Thompson's wife couldn't buy a decentquality art board. Taking matters into his own hands, Thompson began crafting Australian-made boards from his garage, first for personal use and then launching to the public. In 2015, together with his wife, they leased a small warehouse to run classes and build art boards, and then in 2021 moved into a bigger warehouse to house all their specialised equipment and dramatically expand production. Over the years, they have expanded their art board shapes and surfaces to include birch, aluminium, pine, primed MDF, and raw MDF. Archiving the Ephemeral

Art news Archiving the Ephemeral, for the first time, brings together the completed bodies of work spanning over thirty years of performance artist Leisa Shelton's practice at Abbotsford Convent, Melbourne, from 14 to 22 April. The major outcome of Shelton's residency at the multi-arts precinct, Archiving the Ephemeral provides an environment to reflect on the value and role of artists within our society, and the potential to create dialogue and action for the future. SECCA opens

Bega Valley Shire Council in New South Wales unveils the new South East Centre for Contemporary Art (SECCA), located on the traditional lands of the people of the Yuin Nation in the pristine landscapes of the state's South East region. This purpose-built contemporary art space opens on 29 April, following the completion of a major redevelopment and expansion of the thirty-year-old site formerly known as Bega Valley Regional Gallery. SECCA greets its visitors with a new façade while inside treats them to a multi-purpose project and workshop space, archive, and storage areas to house their expanding public collection displaying over 350 historical works and significant loans. Ken Unsworth 50 years of artmaking

Featuring a collection of twenty maquettes and small sculptures, Ken Unsworth has opened his studio in Alexandria, Sydney, with work spanning from the early 1970s to 2010. These historical pieces explore balance, compression, and tension using the mediums of stone, steel, and wood. Unsworth reveals drawing as a speculative act to capture or create and clarify ideas from the imagination and world around. His practice exposes a maquette as a drawing in space with potential for a stream of fanciful possibilities and endless variations – unlike a small-scale version of a large, fully realised sculpture, which is merely a single voice model.
