Letter from the Editor

The winter seasons can be dull, with cloudy skies threatening rain and gusts of icy wind keeping us indoors. One of the reasons our cover, a detail of Lesley Dumbrell's 1973 Study for ‘Simoon’, was chosen from the many images inside this issue was because of its radiant and warming colour palette, motivating us to brave the cold, exit our homes, and see the world through art. Dumbrell's abstract paintings and works on paper are linked by colour and geometry, rhythm and light, movement and visual perception. Multidirectional and intersecting lines are overlaid with repeated patterns of coloured shapes or dashes, freeing themselves from grid substructures to create the impression of activity, and an expression of experience and emotion, sensation and place. DAAF 2024

Experience the rich diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, design and culture at the 18th Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF), returning to Larrakia Country at the Darwin Convention Centre, and online, from 9 to 11 August. Over 1,500 emerging and established artists and designers from over seventy Indigenous-owned art centres will showcase their work, spanning a wide range of styles and mediums, with 100% of all sales going directly to the exhibiting art centres, supporting the artists and their communities. The four-day public program offers a variety of activities for all ages: artist masterclasses in seed, shell and raffia jewellery making, watercolour landscape painting, and ghost net sculpture; children's workshops in lino printing and painting; cultural performances; panel discussions; and open studios with artist talks and material demonstrations.…

Now or Never

Presented by the City of Melbourne, Now or Never explores the intersection of art, ideas, sound, and technology with over one hundred events and sessions, and more than 250 local and international creatives, musicians, artists and thought leaders taking over iconic venues across Melbourne, from 22 to 31 August. Addressing the theme ‘Look through the image’, the expansive Now or Never 2024 program invites audiences to interrogate what's in front of them, explore deeper meanings, contemplate layers of symbolism and hidden messages within, and question reality – from AI-generated narratives and visual distortion works to cinematic and augmented reality experiences. Consuelo Cavaniglia seeing through you Chau Chak Wing Museum Until March 2025 Sydney With a practice focusing on perception and our experience of space, Sydney-based artist Consuelo Cavaniglia responds to the contemporary internal architecture and collections of the Chau Chak Wing Museum in Sydney with her latest body of work, seeing through you. Extending her interest in colour and optics, Cavaniglia creates a site-wide installation that sees the museum's lantern ceiling transformed with yellow fabric, subtly shifting the light filtering through the building's multilevel atrium, while on the glass surfaces, including windows, doors, and balustrades, coloured vinyl works shift the experience of the architecture through reflection and shadow. BLEACH* Festival

Gold Coast's BLEACH* Festival returns, presenting the work of 400+ artists, thirty-plus shows, and 110+ performances of music, dance, theatre and visual art, from 1 to 11 August – across four festival hubs: North Burleigh, Broadbeach Cultural Precinct, HOTA, Home of the Arts and the Tallebudgera Valley. Public program highlights include a twenty-four-hour dance duet; an immersive installation of a melodic playground made up of custom-constructed fibreglass seats that activate a portion of a musical score when you sit on them; a sculptural performance work where 100 local dancers from varying backgrounds, cultures, ages and abilities deliver a moment of togetherness via movement; and a moving archive that shows twenty-one works on a twenty-one screen installation from choreographer Lucy Guerin's twenty-one-year career. IOTA24: Codes in Parallel

From August to October, the second Indian Ocean Craft Triennial, IOTA24, curated by Carola Akindele-Obe and Jude van der Merwe, showcases the work of over thirty international craft artists and groups from six Indian Ocean countries – India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, South Africa, and First Nations Australians and Australians of diverse heritages – responding to the theme ‘Codes in Parallel’, which investigates the multi-various languages codified in contemporary craft.
