Crowdfunding is a popular route to financing a startup watch brand these days, but Abraham-Louis Breguet widely regarded as the greatest watchmaker of them all - was already using his own form of pre-production fundraising back in the 1790s. Breguet was born in Neuchatel, Switzerland, but following the death of his father, was sent to Paris in 1762 as a 15-year-old to serve out an apprenticeship in Versailles - then the French epicentre of not only science and the arts, but also horology. Prodigiously talented, Breguet was introduced to the watch-loving King Louis XVI while still a teenager, a meeting that would later lead to numerous commissions from the Royal Court. Prime minister Christopher Luxton has announced that overseas-based investors who hold an Active Investor Plus (AIP) visa will be allowed to buy a home in New Zealand. It's the place that inspired developer Owen Perry to create a resort and, as he likes to call it, “second-home destination” in a remote area of Baja California a couple of decades ago. LOA 100M GT 2,999 BUILDER FEADSHIP INTERIOR DESIGNER LIAIGRE EXTERIOR DESIGNER JARKKO JÄMSÉN It is uncanny the degree to which the new Pi resembles her 77-metre predecessor, now called Syzygy 818. Despite the extra deck and nearly 23 metres more front stem to stern, exterior designer Jarkko Jämsén has managed to preserve the yacht's elegant proportions. She features the same plumb bow, flared topsides, red waterline and gentle cascade of aft decks. At just 35 millimetres wide, the bow entry is “as sharp as a knife”, according to Jämsén. GABE NEWELL ON HIS PLANS FOR OCEANCO “When you're building a yacht with Oceanco, it's a very collaborative and enjoyable process,” says new yard owner Gabe Newell. “They make you feel like you are part of the team. PRE-REFIT Everyone loves a good comeback story. Originally built in 1929 at Pusey & Jones' shipyard in Wilmington, Delaware, the 38.4-metre Acania has a storied past, from assisting in the search for Amelia Earhart's wreckage to Second World War Navy service and a stint under silver screen actress Constance Bennett. After decades of disrepair, Acania's current owners rescued her from a “backwater slough” in Seattle and brought her to Delta Marine, where the vintage yacht is currently undergoing a keel-up reconstruction.
