Line honours in April’s father-and-son trans-Tasman tussle between Hamish (42) and Malcolm (72) Dickson were taken by Hamish sailing the Dickson 45 Zenith in a time of nine days nine hours and 52 minutes. “I was pretty pleased to beat him,” said Hamish. “He’s a very good sailor.” Malcolm crossed the line 12 hours later in Sarau. “It’s good to be beaten by your son in a boat you designed-and-built yourself,” he smiled. With its new Saona 47 catamaran (14m LOA), French builder Fountaine Pajot has crafted a luxurious cruiser that celebrates free-flowing space, style and comfort. There’s much to like about her, and for me the major attraction is her layout – specifically, her entertainment areas. And it seems the international cat-cruiser market agrees: since the design was launched in April last year, Fountaine Pajot has secured orders for 200 vessels. Aquila Power Catamarans has just won the ‘Multihull of the Year’ in the powerboat category for its innovative Aquila 36. This award follows the prestigious Christofle Yacht Style Award in January. Launched at the 2017 Miami Boat Show, the Aquila 36 is designed to be a luxury weekend family boat, but it also makes a great oceangoing fishing boat, dive boat, cocktail cruiser or passenger vessel with seating capacity for 20 guests. The BuiltBoats nu.seaera 24 Hard-top (LOA 7.50m) is a new concept design looking for an owner or investor willing to consider something that’s – well, a little unusual as 7.5m trailer boats go. Distinguishing features are obvious. There’s the plumb bow, the large window in the hard-top roof, the spacious accommodation, the bathroom and toilet – all encompassed in clean-flowing lines and GRP construction. But closer examination reveals far more intriguing features – a stepped hull and a built-in, electronically-driven stabiliser for when the boat’s at rest. These enhance speed, handling and fuel-efficiency, all while minimising any susceptibility the occupants might have to seasickness. In the distance over by the port of Tauranga is a black dot. I turn away to look at a black-backed gull that is sitting on the water near the OC Tender that’s doubling as my photo boat. By the time I’ve turned back, the black dot has grown markedly and there is a faint humming, which is getting louder. The black dot turns blue and appears to be going like the clappers, slightly elevated out of the water. It roars past with all the presence of a fighter-bomber strafing its target. You’ve heard of scotch on the rocks, but cricket on the ice? This impromptu game took place near the North Pole in April when the Royal Navy submarine HMS Trenchant broke through the ice. The hunter-killer sub was training with two US subs – the USS Connecticut and USS Hartford – an exercise co-ordinated by the US Navy’s Arctic Submarine Laboratory. The trials were designed to test submariners’ skills in operating in the frigid climate of the Arctic Circle. They also allowed the crew to test a range of equipment, notably sonar, against live ‘targets’ and to practice tracking and simulating attacks against other submarines. Batting and bowling through freezing temperatures, the team enjoyed the clear blue skies in one of the coldest places on earth.…

The Australian government is to allocate $500m to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef. The funding, confirmed in the May budget, follows a recent study which found that 30 percent of the reef’s coral died in a nine-month marine heatwave in 2016. In partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the funds will tackle crown-of-thorns starfish, reduce pollution and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Marine Park Authority will also receive an additional $42.7 million for its joint field management program over the next six years. After that, the Marine Park Authority will receive a guaranteed ongoing funding increase of more than $10 million per year for field management – doubling the Australian Government’s contribution to the program in the long-term. Seven Marine’s mega-outboards have arrived in New Zealand. These huge US-manufactured engines – rated at 527, 577 and 627hp – are being distributed locally by Power and Marine Ltd. Seven Marine’s supercharged engines are the world’s largest commercially-produced outboards and each engine is engineered and customised specifically to each client’s order. The company’s online ‘design studio’ allows future owners to pick from a full colour palette to individualise their new engines. LEDs in the engine cover add to the engines’ exclusivity. Volvo Penta became the majority shareholder in Seven Marine last year and its backing has enabled further development. Buzzi’s name appears on 10 offshore world speedboat championship titles, as well as 45 world titles established in vessels designed by him. And then there are more than 50 other speed and endurance records. He set his latest record in March this year aboard a ‘three-point’ hull on Italy’s Lake Como – at the age of 75 – the world speed record for a diesel-powered motorboat: 277.515km/h (149.84 knots). While it cannot be certified, he has probably also established a record as the world’s oldest marine speedster! The success comes after almost two years of development, to get this ‘three-point’ hull prepared for the attempt. Emergency response vessels and training provided by New Zealand to Fiji proved their worth in the wake of two tropical cyclones in April. New Zealand provided Fiji with five emergency response vessels last year, funded through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). The largest, Ai Talai, a rescue vessel constructed in Christchurch by ICON Custom Boats, was delivered in December 2017. The other four were Sealegs amphibious craft. MFAT provided follow-up training and support to the vessel operators through its Pacific Maritime Safety Programme. The training was put to the test after Fiji was hit by two damaging tropical cyclones within a few weeks: Cyclone Josie on April 1, claiming the lives of five people, and Cyclone Keni, which made landfall on the island of Kadavu on April…

One of the most uplifting aspects of travel is the opportunity to be at one with the locals; eat their food, dance their dances or imbibe their inebriants (not always in that order). Boating spent a couple of hours playing around with a pair of Strata 580s. Silent But Violent belongs to a customer while the second boat belongs to Smuggler Marine’s Logan Pringle. Logan’s is powered by an Evinrude E-TEC 90hp, a lightweight, three-cylinder two-stroke displacing 1297cc, while Silent But Violent has a Mercury 100hp FourStroke on the transom, a fourcylinder engine displacing 2100cc. Logan’s boat is the more basic of the two, though it’s still well-specified. It’s pitched as a luxury yacht tender with lots of deck space, but it’s also ideal for soft bait fishing, diving and watersports. In what has been described as history in the making, the global shipping industry has for the first time agreed to help tackle climate change – by halving its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The new international agreement follows a recent meeting of representatives from more than 170 nations at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in London. Countries that voted against the move included Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the US. Like aviation, the global shipping industry has traditionally been excluded from climate change initiatives such as the Paris Agreement because they’re deemed to be an international activity. But shipping is a major pollution problem. The world’s first floating nuclear reactor has been launched in Russia, bound for the Arctic. The 21,500-tonne Akademik Lomonosov – equipped with two nuclear reactors – is headed to the port town of Pevek where it will power the town and oil rigs when its reactor shuts down next year. The 144m behemoth has a crew of 69 and provides 70 megawatts of electricity. It will eliminate the need for about 45,000 tons of fuel or diesel oil, says its manufacturer, OKBM Afrikantov. Greenpeace has condemned the project as a ‘floating Chernobyl’ and ‘nuclear Titanic’, but the ship’s owner Rosatom says the design is considered very effective for generating electricity in remote areas and can be moved on if not required or be used to power desalination plants. RUSTY CHAINPLATE My wife and I have owned Davidson 31 Dalriada for 18 years. We think she was launched in 1975. It seems some work will be required to replace the underdeck steel work holding the forestay – it is mild steel and is corroding badly. I would like to contact any Davidson 31 owners who may have dealt with the problem. I am considering an on-deck stainless plate shaped so it can be through-bolted into the uprise above deck on the vessel’s sides, and to a stainless backing plate under the deck. More than 15 crews, representing over 600 contenders and 15 different countries, are expected on the shores of Morbihan for the 2018 Barracuda Tour, a no-kill fishing competition organised by Beneteau. In 2013, the first event, named after Beneteau’s Barracuda motorboat, set out from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and headed to St Malo. The boats even braved the Raz de Sein for rounds of catch and release sea-bass fishing. The second event was open to all-comers, 100 anglers embarking on 20 Beneteau-supplied Barracuda 7s. In 2015, a Mediterranean Barracuda Tour was launched in Corsica, while German and Chinese dealers organised their own Barracuda Tours. The new V8s – some five years in development – come in 250hp and 300hp versions. Sleek in their white (or traditional black) livery with snazzy, coloured accents down the back of the cowl, the engines are super-slim, super-quiet and super-torquey. Naturally-aspirated, they need plenty of displacement to develop their power and torque, and both models are built around a 4.6-litre powerhead. As ‘quad-cam’ engines, each bank of cylinders has separate intake and outlet camshafts, making four in total, and these articulate 32 valves, four per cylinder. They’re also impressively versatile. Owners Geoff and Shelley Payne decided on the 58 Fly after seeing its world launch at the Hong Kong International Boat Show in February last year. The Paynes had viewed the smaller 56 model in Sydney, and liked what they saw; once they laid eyes on the new 58, the deal was done. At 17.3m LOA she’s a bit bigger than their previous boat, a 16m Carver, but with three adult daughters and the first of the grandchildren already on the scene, the Paynes were happy to have more room to move. “There were two main non-negotiables: each of the cabins had to have its own en suite – when you’ve got girls who like their own space that’s very important. The first thing that strikes me about November Rain as I stroll down to meet her and her owners at Pine Harbour is how tidy and pretty she looks on the water. Neat as a pin, gleaming with a new flybridge and tuna tower, she’s an airy pyramid of light and brightwork.
