Kev & Ian’s Marine will be relocating to new, renovated premises in Wiri, South Auckland, with easy access to SH20 and SH1. Luke’s long-term association with Kev & Ian’s Marine began as a kid, when he played hide and seek in the boat yard. Kevin Griffin gifted him his first computer. Luke took charge of spare parts and the showroom in 1998, the relationship culminating in this purchase. Currently, the Seafarer 6m RIB is the company’s largest build. With the luxury of starting with a ‘blank piece of paper’, Curtling brought his extensive experience and his personal wish list to the boat. The result is a well-founded and impeccably constructed all-round sport boat. Pontoons are built from the German-manufactured Valmax TPU fabric. It sounds like an axiom from a nautically-themed self-help book, but in reality, it is the experience of one of New Zealand’s oldest producers of fibreglass boats. Not many have been around as long as Fi-Glass Boats and like the statement left suggests, the company has seen it all, from market crashes to boom times. This boat has been restored for a client in Queenstown, and I caught up with Harry just before she was shipped south to her new owner. His involvement with the Mason Clipper goes back to 2016, when Harry was building a gleaming mahogany racer, Baby Thunder (featured in the May 2016 issue of Boating New Zealand). In the interval between the last of the old Circas and the first of the new ones, Circa Marine has built a series of superyachts, several 50 to 70-foot Dashew passage-makers and around 1,000 26-38ft alloy boats for Toyota, Japan. With some 70 staff, the company currently fabricates hulls for Sealegs and Naiad, alongside the new range of Circa trailer boats, in addition to undertaking general engineering, repair and refit work on vessels up to 60m. Circa’s recreational models will be marketed by Whangarei company Offshore Boats NZ. Examples of the car-to-boat design migration aren’t hard to find – even among the classic boatbuilders. In 1955 the legendary US boatyard Chris-Craft built its famous Cobra. This runabout, the water equivalent of two-seat convertible cars, followed hot on the heels of the launch of the Chevrolet Corvette, the first car featuring mass-produced fibreglass bodywork. Then considered a futuristic (and very fashionable) material, fibreglass was adopted by Chris-Craft for the Cobra’s engine hood (a V8 of course) and for other parts of the boat. Similarly, other car details were copied by the nautical fraternity – air intakes and dashboards, windscreens and fins – many of these originally inspired by the rockets developed in the US-USSR ‘space race’. The Semifly 36 expands Dickey Boats’ Semifly range, which now extends from 28 to 45 feet. Plans are also well advanced for a Semifly 50-footer and there’s a Semifly 40-foot model ready to go that slots in nicely between the new 36 and the 45. While the Semifly 36 is a new model, its direct ancestor is the company’s popular Semifly 32. Star Clipper is a 115m four-masted barquentine – a cruise ship operating in the tropical waters around Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Launched in 1992, her design and rigging are faithful to those of the legendary clippers that plied these waters more than a century ago. Her four masts carry 16 sails with a total area of 3,365m2 – many with odd names such as fisherman, topgallant and spanker. Seafarer managing director Neil Curtling has a lengthy track record in boatbuilding – and in RIB design and manufacturing specifically. Around 35 years in fact. So his thoughts about what makes a tough, robust RIB are worth considering. And it’s the bonding system he’s developed for his inflatables’ tubes that is particularly interesting. He believes his Dual-Seal technology – where butt joins in the PVC/polyurethane tubes are welded both inside and outside – is unique in New Zealand, and possibly in the world. Hooks come in many shapes and sizes, often designed for specific fishing tasks, but not all hooks are created equal: differences in quality can be marked, depending on the material and the manufacturing process used and, along with size and gauge (thickness), hook shapes vary considerably as well.
