THE BIGGEST DEBATE LEADING UP TO this year’s TIPA World Awards – you can read all about the winners in this issue – was the proposal to expand the number of smartphone categories from one to three. Given all the TIPA members are photography magazines of one flavour or another, the discussion was robust. After all, it’s the smartphone that’s decimated a significant sector of the camera business that’s resulted in a very big market retraction. To be honest, it’s hard to see how this could have been stopped, given everything else that the smartphone does, but for many photographers it’s definitely not a ‘real’ camera. The proponents of adding more smartphone categories argued that they are rapidly becoming more like real cameras as lenses, image sensors and processing options…

WINNER Here’s a great example of capturing exactly the ‘decisive moment’… which can be very hard to do with unpredictable subjects such as insects. Steve Genesin was the photographer in the right spot at the right time to capture Monarch butterflies swarming on trees in a South Australian national park, with a lone butterfly arriving to join its companions. This image was created entirely in-camera and has only been cropped to enhance the composition. Steve used an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS PRO zoom lens. UPDATED 24-70mm BRINGS SONY FE LENS SYSTEM UP TO 67 MODELS SONY’S RELENTLESS PROGRAM of expanding its FE-mount line continues with the new FE 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master II, with which the system ticks over to 67 models. The Mark II version of the GM series 24-70mm f/2.8 is a similar upgrade to the 70-200mm f/2.8, further leveraging the size and optical performance benefits available with the mirrorless camera configuration. There have also been a number of ergonomic refinements based on, says Sony, feedback from professional photographers. At 695g, the new lens is a significant 20% lighter than the previous model and approximately 18% less bulky, with the overall length reduced by 16mm. Indian photographer Debdatta Chakraborty won the overall prize of Pink Lady Food Photographer Of The Year for 2022 with an intimate image full of warmth and humanity, titled Kebabiyana. The photograph was taken on Khayyam Chowk, an ordinary Indian street in the city of Srinagar (in Kashmir) that, by night, transforms into a buzzing food hub. Whether shooting the Olympic Games, Ashes cricket, Champions League soccer or the Commonwealth Games, he’s earned a stellar reputation for capturing the most high-pressure moments in sporting history. If you’re the owner of a full-frame Sony Alpha mirrorless camera then you’d have to be happy when it comes to adding to your lens system. Not only is Sony’s own line-up creeping towards 70 models, but there isn’t a third-party lens maker of any note that doesn’t offer something in the FE mount. If anything, you’re probably spoilt for choice, but the real positive here is that there’s something for every budget. Korean lens maker Samyang has been balancing affordability and performance with its growing range of FE-mount autofocus lenses and it’s not been afraid to step into the more hotly contested categories… such as a 24-70mm f/2.8 which is made by just about everybody. The first OM System camera body may be a bit on the chubby side compared to its petite Olympus OM-D series cousins, but it’s the lenses that will seal the deal here, especially the telephotos. The new OM System 40-150mm telezoom is perhaps the best illustration yet of why Micro Four Thirds can still serve it up to the bigger sensor formats. It’s effectively an 80-300mm, but it’s compact enough to fit snugly in the palm of your hand, and it weighs just a fraction over 380g.
