Belhar police have opened a murder case following the death of an unknown woman whose body was found lying in an open field behind Oasis School in Erica Drive on Friday at midnight. Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said police officers were dispatched to the scene after being informed by passers-by. Pojie said she was lying on her back when her body was discovered with a stab wound to the neck. She was declared dead by paramedics on the scene. “An autopsy will be performed to determine the possible cause of death. Cornerstone Institute has announced accomplished Professor Crain Soudien as its new president. Soudien, who will be succeeding Professor John Volmink, was officially installed as Cornerstone Institute’s new president during a graduation ceremony on Saturday. This after Volmink’s resignation, which took effect on the same day. Cornerstone is an independent, not-for-profit higher education institution in South Africa. TUNIS: At least 29 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa died when their boat sank off the Tunisia coast as they tried to cross the Mediterranean to Italy, a human rights group said yesterday, the latest migrant boat disaster off Tunisia. In the last four days, five migrant boats have sunk off the southern city of Sfax, leaving 67 missing and many dead, after a significant increase in boats heading towards Italy. Four men from Milnerton pleaded guilty and were sentenced following their arrest for the possession of abalone valued at more than R4.8 million. A joint operation was conducted by a multidisciplinary team that included the Hawks serious organised crime investigation team, Crime Intelligence as well as officials from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental Affairs (DFFE). The successful operation found the individuals in possession of 8 893 units of shucked abalone to the value of more than R4.5 million. The units were forfeited to the State. The much vaunted, much publicised country shutdown was a monumental flop. A German tourist who was last seen attempting the Karbonkelberg peak in Hout Bay, has still not been found. Nick Frischke, a 22-year-old student from Döbern in Germany, was last contacted by his family on Wednesday, February 15. CHAIRMAN of the Sekunjalo Group Dr Iqbal Survé has welcomed the outcome of the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) and AYO Technology Solutions Limited court case after both parties agreed to a settlement.
