A Pick n Pay employee stole R350 000 from his Elsies River-based employer and blew half of it in a month before he was bust with the money on his bed at his Eastern Cape home. Police only recovered R150 000 from the man who, according to a source, told police he had to pay protection money with the rest. Last week, he was transported from the Eastern Cape. Although the theft occurred at the Pick n Pay in Elsies River, it’s unclear whether the money belonged to the retailer or the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). As 7-year-old Nasiegha Williams from Parkwood is fighting for her life in hospital after being shot and injured last week, residents from her community and Parkwood Primary School pupils staged a demonstration calling for an end to the shooting of children in the area. The pupils carried placards stating “Stop the violence” and “Stop abusing us” while chanting “Enough is enough, we want to live”. They called for justice for their wounded schoolmate, who is in Grade 2. Nasiegha was caught in gang crossfires on April 7 while she was playing inside her aunt’s house at Moosa Walk. THE Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) has clarified its decision to withdraw the country’s amended protected species regulations to allow the department more time to consider issues brought forward by impacted hunting associations. The regulations would have increased legislative protection of more terrestrial and freshwater species. Environment Minister Barbara Creecy recently withdrew regulations pertaining to threatened or protected terrestrial and freshwater species (Tops) and the associated species list in the government gazette on March 31 pertaining to stricter management of elephants, rhinos, leopards, the alien and invasive species list, and the list of critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable and protected species.
