The case of the four prison warders and their former colleague accused of killing an inmate is ready for trial. Siyakudumisa Siqola, Xolani Kom, Sithembiso Mpondlwana, Bulelani Kulashe and Thembile Mbutuma appeared in the Wynberg Regional Court for the murder of Luzuko Maseko. The victim allegedly stabbed a warder during a search operation. The incident happened in November 2020 at Medium-B, Pollsmoor and the police opened an inquest docket for investigation. Sedimentologist Ryan Tucker from Stellenbosch University’s Department of Earth Sciences was part of an international team that discovered a new dinosaur with strong teeth and jaws to chew through tough plant material about 100 million years ago in the mountains of Utah. The team of researchers recovered most of the juvenile dinosaur’s skeleton that existed during the mid-Cretaceous, approximately 99 million years ago – including its skull, vertebrae and limbs from Utah’s Cedar Mountain Formation, but they say the dino’s most striking feature is its powerful jaw for plant eating. The new dino was named Iani smithi after the two-faced Roman god of change, Janus, who symbolised transitions. More than 100 in-patients fled an unregistered drug rehabilitation centre in Khayelitsha this weekend, leading to an emergency meeting with parents and the centre’s board. The Iliso Lakhe Rehabilitation Centre was founded by Shaheed Silwana, who died on June 4. A new management was implemented which included his former romantic partner, Siyamthanda Fateema Diko. After Silwana’s death, Diko claimed his family tried to exclude her from running the centre. “The centre was founded by Silwana and I in December 2021. The reason for this (escape) is that his family planned to cast me out shortly after his death. THE Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday postponed the case against Rwandan genocide suspect Fulgence Kayishema after his lawyer, Juan Smuts, asked for time to consult his client. The request came as the State told the court that it had increased the initial five charges Kayishema faced to 54. Of the 54 charges, 35 are contraventions of the Immigration Act, 10 are to do with infringements of the Refugee Act and nine relate to fraud. Friday was Kayishema’s third appearance in court. Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke highly of an upcoming peace mission on the Ukraine crisis by six African countries, describing it as a “good” thing. Capetonian David Harte, 64, has invented and patented a light bulb socket able to mechanically and electrically interface both screw-type and bayonet-type light bulbs as well as downlight-type light bulbs. “I was motivated by the fact that the design of Thomas Edison’s screw socket hasn’t changed in 140 years since its invention.” Harte’s invention has now been patented in the biggest markets in the world – these are the US, Australia, China, India and, of course, South Africa.
