FORMER chief financial officer of Steinhoff, Andries Benjamin le Grange, found guilty of fraud, will serve an effective five years in jail. Le Grange yesterday pleaded guilty in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court to one count of fraud amounting to over R367 million. His plea was part of a Section 105A Plea and Sentence agreement. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng said the 50-year-old was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment. Half of the sentence was suspended on condition that he is not found guilty of fraud during the period of suspension. NPA spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said in addition, Le Grange has to give evidence for the State in any further criminal proceedings against directors, officers and employees of the Steinhoff Group. EXCITED faces lit up the newly constructed Science Teaching and Learning Centre at Belgravia High School in Athlone yesterday. The centre, aimed at enhancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, was opened through collaborative work between Advancing Knowledge Non-Profit Company (AK NPC), Garden Cities Archway Foundation, and the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). Belgravia High School was among four schools that were blessed with the state-of-the-art centre. One of two California doctors in the drug-related death of actor Matthew Perry has pleaded guilty in the case. On Wednesday, Dr Mark Chavez, who is among the five people charged in the overdose death of the Friends star, pleaded to illegally distributing the drug ketamine. Ketamine is a short-acting anaesthetic that is also used as a treatment for depression and pain management. Perry died at age 54 in October last year, and according to an autopsy report, he passed away from the “acute effects” of ketamine and other factors that caused him to lose consciousness and drown in his hot tub. A FATHER has pleaded for assistance to obtain a DNA test that will help identify the body of his toddler found floating in a sewage dam. Little Hlaluminathi Daki, 3, was last seen playing near his home in Zwelitsha, Khayelitsha, on September 24. His lifeless body was found floating in murky waters on Wednesday morning.
