Greetings CAR readers. The team and I had such a great time putting the September issue together for you; we really hope you have as much fun reading it. BMW has whipped the covers off the latest 2 Series Coupé, with the Bavarian marque announcing the newest iteration of its compact two-door coupé is designed with a focus placed squarely on dynamic performance. Adhering to this, the top-of-the-line 2 gains xDrive allwheel drive for the first time. Viewed alongside the previousgeneration 2 Coupé, the G42 is 105 mm longer and 64 mm wider. The wheelbase has been stretched by 51 mm, while ground clearance has decreased by 28 mm. For the non-M Performance models, the fore and aft tracks have been widened by 54 mm and 31 mm respectively over their forebears, while the M240i gains an 9 mm and 4 mm between the front and rear tracks for improved dynamism. Even if you’re not a Golf fanatic, you’ll most likely know the story of how the GTI came to be. It was the ’70s, a time of oil crisis and recession. So much so that Germany saw fit to enforce closure of the autobahn on Sundays to ration fuel and motorsport of any description was outlawed at Wolfsburg. But that didn’t stop six engineers banding together on weekends behind closed doors to work on a special project without senior management’s knowledge. Cliff’s first venture into building special vehicles was called Fun Conversions, where he built 4x4 versions of the Ford Cortina bakkie. In 1987, he established Special Vehicle Manufacturers to design and build the SVM 3000, an off-roader with similar styling to a Jeep CJ2. While older brother Kelvin initially topped the time sheets in his Audi R8 LMS, Sheldon was languishing at the back of the grid and his fellow BMW drivers weren’t doing much better. By the end of Sunday’s feature race at the famous Cathedral of Speed, both of the Van der Lindes were flying high.
