Lotus Technology, an entirely new “intelligent technology division” of Group Lotus, is a global subsidiary to augment the 73-year-old brand’s DNA, according to the company. Set for completion in 2024, construction of a state-of-the-art tech centre started at the end of August in Wuhan, China. Where each of these double cabs possesses gadgetry and standard specification that will more than please any owner at the price point, Bakkie Shootout gave our panel the privileged opportunity to compare like for like as well as the higher and lower end of the spectrum. It enabled us to ascertain the standouts in what is becoming an increasingly high-tech segment. As a test of ultimate toughness, we considered a bakkie tug of war and … then thought better of it. We considered a caravan-towing challenge but most of our vehicles didn’t have a towbar. Gerhard finally devised a drag with a difference. He fabricated a beastly ±600 kg contraption of railway sleepers and cement-filled tyres to be dragged behind each bakkie on an 800 m oval course. The fastest time wins. With each bakkie in low-range (Amarok in Off-road mode), this proved to be an excellent test of engine power, chassis strength, tyre performance and transmission efficacy. A few laps earlier, the 26-year-old from Krugersdorp had fought his way to the tail end of the leading bunch of riders when heavy rain began to fall on the postcard-pretty Red Bull Ring circuit. Marc Marquez, Francesco Bagnaia, Fabio Quartararo, Jorge Martin and Joan Mir dived for the pit lane to make the change-over to their spare “wet” motorcycles, standing ready with treaded rain tyres. Often classified ads do not give the mileage covered. This could be because of an overhauled engine, a particularly high mileage that may put potential buyers off or a speedometer that has been replaced. When it comes to Toyota bakkies and some cars, it seems mileage covered is not an issue; one of the ads we spotted revealed an example with well over one million kilometres under the belt. Switching to the diesel versions mentioned above, the engine size went to 2,8-litre and finally 3,0-litre from 1998. This engine had a respectable (for a non-turbo) 67 kW. With the semblance of an early leaderboard starting to emerge and a few surprise packages showing their hand, we headed out for the off-road portion of the Shootout. First, we went off to the Klipbokkop quarry for some bona fide break-over, wheel-in-the-air axle articulation. @PeterPalm Let’s be brutally honest. Ideally, the head and block should be as one to eliminate the pesky gasket. Unfortunately, this is far too difficult to manufacture as a single unit and is complicated by the block frequently being constructed from cast iron while the more complex head is made from aluminium. The advantages of an alloy head are much better heat dissipation and it is just a third of the mass of the older cast iron heads. By the 1960s to early ‘70s, most manufacturers had made the switch. Withstanding the combustion pressures without any leakage is a daunting task for the lowly gasket and, to add to this, water and oil channels for cooling and lubrication also pass between head and block.
