PeterPalm12 5 030 km 9,70 L/100 km The Landtrek was booked in for its inaugural oil change to rid the system of any detritus that managed to escape the oil filter just before the 5 000 km mark. The slick process was carried out at the Tygervalley dealership and the bakkie was returned in spotless shape and in good time. Carroll Shelby often used to joke that if he was better at being a chicken farmer, he probably wouldn’t have raced and built cars. Even so, life for the eponymous Shelby was never going to be dull. He helped train pilots to fight in World War II and by 1952, he was doing so well on the racetrack that he caught the attention of Aston Martin and Maserati. His natural speed also brought along a few big accidents. At the Carrera Pan Americana Mexico in 1954, Shelby had one of his biggest, rolling his Austin-Healey several times and shattering parts of his arms. The heart of all Alfas is the engine, and the straight-six has an illustrious history for the marque. The first three-litre, built from 1920, produced 70 kW and was capable of 160 km/h. The version built for the 1923 Targa Florio managed 95 kW, enough to win the event. After Nicolo Romeo employed Vittorio Jano as his chief designer, the P2 Grand Prix car won most of the races in 1924 and the sport’s first world championship.
