A 15sqm yacht with minimal freeboard, just 6ft (1.8m) of beam and room for only one below, sailed from Cowes to Stockholm in 12 days this summer with a crew of three.
The challenge, issued by Baltic regatta organiser Olle Appelberg (see story left), was to retrace Uffa Fox’s 1,000-mile voyage of 1930, which he completed in 17 days in the 22sqm yacht Vigilant (CB262).
Luke Yeates, 25, heard the call and bought the 33ft (10m) 15sqm yacht Vixen expressly for the purpose. Luke, along with Jack Gifford, 22, naval architect with GL Watson, and William Shepherd, a 19-year-old chemistry student, left Cowes on 24 July, reaching Stockholm for the start of the Baltic regatta series.
