DEADLINE 2026 E5 fuel availability to be reviewed in five years As part of the Department for Transport’s recent announcement that it will introduce E10 petrol as standard in the UK by September, its commitment to provide E5 fuel in higher-octane ‘protection grade’ for older vehicles including classic Fords is to be reviewed by the Government in five years. Both the maintenance of the Super E5 protection grade and the introduction of E10 will be evaluated to ensure they remain appropriate to the needs of the market. Fortunately for owners of older vehicles not compatible with E10 without modification, the Government has reassured the Federation Of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) that without a suitable alternative becoming available, it’s likely the Super E5 protection grade would continue to be available.…

Maybe not, but it’s what the BBC picked in 1971 for testing in the High Andes. But this was no ordinary Mk4. It was a four-wheel drive one (4wd), using the same Ferguson Formula four-wheel drive as the Mk4s that operated with police forces around the UK from 1969. THE SCIENCE BIT TREATING THE METALWORK Ben has a specific process for painting metal components. “We dip parts then carefully shotblast them. Even gentle shotblasting takes some metal away so we mainly use it to provide a key for the paint coats that follow. We’ll then E-Coat the part, Electrophoretic Painting, that removes any remaining grease and oil and it puts paint into the tiniest crevices, such as the join between two welded panels. Then we powdercoat it, which gives it an attractive, smooth finish. Powder coating is purely cosmetic, it won’t protect against corrosion and it doesn’t like being applied on sharp edges. THE 4WD POLICE ZEPHYRS GOOD — BUT NOT TO WORK ON Harry Ferguson Research built the Zephyr police cars under Project P134, which began in late 1968, and the first examples were handed over at RRL in Crowthorne on April 4, 1969. The police officers that drove them, loved them and found them far better than the rear-drive Mk4s. The police maintenance people weren’t entirely happy though, because the transfer cases needed specialist maintenance, so the car as supplied was not suitable for buying in for police work. DAMAGED GOODS “IT GETS LOADS OF ATTENTION WHEN I TAKE IT OUT” It’s not just rust you need to look out for when restoring a classic car as Glyn quickly found out. “The rear nearside wing had been replaced previously and didn’t line up well with the doors, so this had to be removed and refitted in the correct position,” he tells us. The rear nearside wheel tub also showed signs of previous poor repairs from when the car was still quite new. Combined with the badly-aligned rear outer wing, Glyn suspects the car had been involved in a minor bump back in its youth. LAST GASP Everyone remembers the all-conquering Sierra RS500s in the British Touring Car Championship but the Sapphire Cosworth? In 1991, with the RS500s effectively ruled out of taking overall victory, a new Super Touring class was created, with Trakstar Motorsport electing to run rear-drive Sapphire Cosworths instead. A two-car team was planned but with limited sponsorship, only ran one car all season with the previous year’s champion, Robb Gravett at the wheel. Despite impressive preparation, Trakstar couldn’t compete with the manufacturer-supported Vauxhall Cavaliers and BMW M3s and Robb finished the season in 11th place.
