Alois Ruf Jr needs no introduction to Porsche cognoscenti, but, since we’re reviewing a very special RUF product here, just to get everyone up to speed, here’s a little background. Many of our Stateside readers will know Randy Carlson as founder of oldbug.com, a business specialising in buying and selling air-cooled Volkswagens, with the occasional classic Porsche thrown in for good measure. His successful career has resulted in the supply of vehicles to various film studios, work including loans of several Beetles for use during production of the Herbie: Fully Loaded movie in 2005. In fact, Randy has worked both sides of the camera, popping up on a handful of television shows, including appearances as a car appraiser in thirteen episodes of Discovery Channel’s Sticker Shock in 2018. As far as many 911 enthusiasts are concerned, whether they’re restomodders, purists or something in between, the 964 has now come of age. It wasn’t in production long, but the combining of modern technology and classic design has served this flavour Porsche well, the result being one of the more desirable Neunelfers you can buy, promising classic looks and feel with more modern engineering than was available to earlier 911s. To the layperson, however, the 964 has all the image of a 1970s-built Porsche. The pronounced ‘torpedo’ wings, circular headlights and sloping rear are more or less unaltered from the G-series 911, although the black plastic ‘impact’ bumpers are toned down insofar as they were replaced with integrated polyurethane parts. The period 1973 to 1974 was a traumatic one for sports cars. American safety and pollution-busting legislation meant a hefty aesthetic blow from the ‘ugly stick’, combined with a double whammy drop in performance. Previously elegant and svelte designs grew frankly hideous appendages front and rear. Think MGB, Fiat 124 Spyder and X1-9. The 911 didn’t escape change, either. Predictably, Porsche executed and integrated this imposed act of wanton vandalism rather more sympathetically, so much so the G-series 911s it ushered in lasted fifteen years with no significant styling changes. Likewise, the similarly imposed drop in performance was soon negated with the introduction of advanced Bosch fuel injection systems getting the absolute max from the fuel and air mix, although — perhaps fittingly — US market machines never truly caught…
