There are still quite a few good MkII Consuls available, including some superb examples, so look for the best you can afford. Even so, look for rust everywhere. Rust prevention treatment when these cars were new was scant at best. Even though, the Consul was made from decent metal it’s still a ‘Fifties design and water and moisture traps abound. Sills, jacking points, door bottoms, strut top mounts, windscreen surround, boot well, chassis rails and outriggers are particularly prone to rust and can be very expensive to get repaired. Replacing the sills on these cars is a major task.
The Consul’s four-cylinder engine is pretty tough and long-lived, but only if serviced regularly with quality components. The same is true of the transmission. Once you’ve mastered it, the column shift…
