WHEN I started collecting coins back in the 1950s, I initially focused on Lincoln cents. The main reason for this was cost: I could keep 50 Lincolns for every half dollar spent. I picked half dollar because that was my allowance through most of the 1950s.
The key dates at the time were well known and the object of every collectors’ search. They were the 1909-S, the 1914-D, the 1931-S, and of course the Holy Grail, the 1909-S V.D.B. Of the big four, I found only the 1909-S and the 1914-D, two of each in grades from Good to Fine. Actually, the 1914-Ds were both Goods, and the 1909-Ss were in Fine.
