But their resemblance to dogs is their most endearing characteristic to me (I’m a dog lover). Yet wolves project independence. Close at hand, even captive ones are aloof and mysterious. If you hear them howl, it’s a singular treat. PHOTO TIPS To get close-ups like these, you have to photograph wolves in captivity. Even so, stay far from the animals. Photograph them with a telephoto lens. This works to blur the background, emphasize the wolf in the frame and project a feeling of space and distance. THERE IS A SELFIE ON MY DESKTOP in which I look naturally happy: I am beaming into the Colorado afternoon summer sun as I stand next to a curve in the South Platte River with my underwater ephemeral art sculpture just over my left shoulder. Wait, “underwater ephemeral art sculpture?” Yes—but more on that later. I took this photo at the end of my first workshop at the Rocky Mountain Land Library. Recently, my daughter Peyton and I embarked on the Discover Uwharrie Welcome Center passport program near our home in Montgomery County, North Carolina. The program awards medallions to anyone who visits and takes selfies at 10 designated sites in the Uwharrie Mountain region. It sounded simple enough. I have lived in the area my entire life, so finding all the places would be an easy and educational way to show Peyton some of the history and natural beauty of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the United States. What I didn’t expect was that I’d end up learning as much as she did over the next few months.
