Combining art, fashion, science, and conservation, the revelatory exhibition Fragonard: The Fantasy Figures brings together—for the first time—a newly discovered drawing by Jean Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) and some 14 of his paintings that have been identified with it including the Gallery’s own Young Girl Reading (c. 1769). Margaret Olley’s Duxford Street property was her home, her studio and the subject matter for her paintings for almost 50 years. Sometimes the interiors were merely the backdrop to a still life painting, for which she would arrange and re-arrange objects from her dense collection of ‘things’. At other times it was the interiors themselves that were the subject matter. The blue kitchen, the green kitchen, the yellow room, the hat factory interiors (garden room, dining area, sitting room) were rendered in changing light – luminous in in the morning light, cosy and cavernous in the evening – the rooms were re-visioned to capture particular, fleeting moments in time. Yoshie Hughes was born in Hokkaido, Japan and came to Australia in 1996 for a working holiday where she ended up starting a new family and a career as an artist on the Gold Coast. While growing up in Japan, Yoshie worked at the family business of a bakery. She believes this is where her art skills cultivated, helping her family decorate cakes, showcases, shop fronts and design advertisements. In 1996, Yoshie came to Australia with the intention of staying for 12 months on a working holiday, however within a few months she met her husband Tony. This fall, The Frick Collection will present Veronese in Murano: Two Venetian Renaissance Masterpieces Restored, a focused exhibition on two recently conserved and rarely seen paintings by the celebrated artist Paolo Veronese (1528–1588), Saint Jerome in the Wilderness and Saint Peter Visiting Saint Agatha in Prison. While the paintings are known to scholars, their remote location in a church in Murano, an island in the lagoon of Venice, has made them difficult to study. Saint Jerome in the Wilderness has been exhibited outside the church only once—in 1939, in the Paolo Veronese exhibition at Ca’ Giustinian, in Venice—while Saint Peter Visiting Saint Agatha in Prison has not left since being installed there in the early nineteenth century. “Painting is like entering into your own world where I can create anything I want, using any colour and materials in the process” Mario Sukkar is a young Sydney based artist with exemplary talent. He recalls first becoming interested in art at the tender age of five, “I would draw cartoons which led me to draw realistic portraits by the age of eight.” At this time, Mario drew portraits of his parents, celebrities and Saints. At the age of 11, he started painting. “My mum bought me paints, little brushes and a little easel. I painted my first portrait of St Charbel.” Mario would practise art in his studio every day, experimenting with colours and techniques, and painting both portraits and landscapes.
