The following steps help keep your machine looking and sewing its best between trips to a professional service technician. For warranty purposes, this is best left to your service technician. How did you get started with embroidery? My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was very little, so I have sewn for as long as I can remember. My grandmother was an amazing seamstress who taught herself how to sew out of necessity. She grew up motherless and poor, and she wanted to have more than one dress to wear. UNDERSTANDING LACE EMBROIDERY There are two basic types of machine embroidered lace. The two types are digitized differently from each other. The first type is digitized to be embroidered on a backing of some sort of sheer or semi-sheer material such as tulle or organza. These laces are often very airy in design, frequently featuring lightweight stitching and large, open areas between motifs. Backed laces are stitched using a wash-away stabilizer—but because of their delicate, open nature they require at least a small amount of structure left behind to hold the design together. The second type of machine embroidered lace is called freestanding lace. Freestanding lace is digitized so that the lace is entirely self-supporting after the stabilizer is removed.
