Lauren Turner specialises in sampler designs. With the Queen’s Jubilee, her passing last year and the upcoming coronation of King Charles III, she has been very busy making sure there is a suitable sampler to stitch for each occasion… What led you to produce a collection of royal designs? My first foray into royal samplers was the Golden Jubilee of 2002. In those days I sold mainly to the retail trade. I was delighted to receive a large order for this sampler from the Royal Palace Collection. The St Edwards crown is used solely for coronations. It is a bold image, so I adopted it as the perfect basis for the Jubilee celebration. When the Diamond Jubilee came round I decided to revise the crown image in stronger colours, and…

Sadly, I recently went through the breakup of a relationship I’d been really excited about. It ended suddenly with no blame on either side, and I was left baffled as to what had happened and where things had gone wrong. Our Cardiff house’s story… Cardiff is not only the capital of Wales it is its largest city. Dating back to Norman times, it is regarded as having the most castles in the world, the most famous being that of Cardiff Castle which has stood for 2,000 years. More recently it is famous for its national parks, concerts, myths and legends along with its many attractions. Architecture is on the whole Victorian and later, reflecting Cardiff’s position as a major coal port in the 19th century providing prosperity for modern buildings. The most common building materials used are Bath Stone, blue Pennant Stone and red brick after evolving from the Gothic Revival and half-timbered Tudor revival styles which had been so popular in Wales, which our house reflects. Leslie Groover, from Michigan, USA, has been stitching for 36 years! THE ESSENTIAL KIT YOU’LL NEED TO START STITCHING FABRICS Aida is the ideal choice for cross stitch beginners – it is a block-weave fabric, which is divided into squares with a grid of holes. Each cross stitch is worked over one square. Aida comes in a range of sizes which are called counts. So 14 count means that there are 14 squares to the inch and this will make 14 cross stitches. Aida also comes in 16, 18 and 20 count. The larger the number, the more stitches to the inch and so the smaller the design will stitch up. Evenweave is a woven grid of threads in a finer count. Each stitch is usually worked over two threads, so a 28 count evenweave with each stitch worked over two…
