You won’t find many postcards of Swindon, but it’s a good gateway town for day rides into the Cotswolds, North Wessex Downs and more. Ride past some of the famous white horse hill figures, and the stones of Avebury. You need a sturdy bike for the Ridgeway (chalk, gravel, bumpy mud, etc) but it’s a must-do in friendly weather.
ROUTE ONE
SOUTHERN LOOP 58 MILES WHITE HORSE TRAIL
Day of rolling country lanes, mild climbs, and four chalky horses. Uffington is first, with spectacular ridgetop views; back roads go past (real) horses’ training grounds to lovely Marlborough (cafes, and scrappy horse). More lanes and ridgetops past Hackpen Hill Horse and Broad Town Horse.
