The long-distance supremo rode the 386 miles from Edinburgh to London in a provisional time of 17-42.47, breaking the previous record set by Pete Wells in 1989 of 17-48.04 - subject to the Road Records Association approving the time. A long with millions of other cyclists left event-less by lockdown, I got fully stuck into Zwift racing in the spring of 2020. It took a while to improve but after a full year, my fitness was the sharpest it had ever been and I’d developed a pretty good eye for reading the races. Information on this recently discovered glass negative is sparse but we do know that this shows a B. Pusey (possibly Bernard Pusey, a notable rider of the time) leading E. It appears that a tandem pacer is dropping into line as another circles up against the fence on the far right, all of which suggests that the tandems worked in relays while the paced riders completed the full distance. Speeds in these types of races were typically very high, making them dangerous. Elder stateswoman of the British track world championship team, Katie Archibald led a promising up-and-coming squad of youngsters as the team claimed two rainbow jerseys and six medals. Archibald, the most seasoned rider of the squad who travelled to the world championships in Roubaix, won her second omnium world championship in signature imperious style, winning all four races. She also racked up bronze in the team pursuit, bronze in the Madison alongside Neah Evans and silver in the points race. Previously indoor training was something you reluctantly skulked off and did if the weather really was too dreadful for proper riding, but even before the pandemic it was starting to emerge from the gloom of a cobwebby garage to take its rightful place in a bespoke and brightly lit ‘pain cave’ bedecked with expensive, high-tech equipment.
