Roubaix, despite having one of the largest hôtels de ville in France, is not a place where magic happens often, but once a year it arrives on its old, outdoor velodome. This year, as in the previous two, saw Mathieu van der Poel sprinkle some of his stardust over the town, as he soloed to a third straight victory at Paris-Roubaix.
Taken alone, looked at on ProCyclingStats, that result looks ordinary, a walk in the park for the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider, an easy eighth Monument. The truth is it was anything but, with victory coming after a duel with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), and an earlier tussle with Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), who completed the podium, with misfortune spelling the end of both of this pair’s challenge.
