The emissions control systems modern diesel engines are saddled with cause them to fail prematurely. When this happens, shops are left with tons of scrap steel. Because EPA restrictions are so tight on American businesses, that scrap is shipped (by truck and rail) to a U.S. port, where it is shipped overseas to be recycled in a country with zero air quality restrictions. One mega cargo ship emits the equivalent amount of air pollution as 50 million cars, every day. We had made some great initial gains on our 12-valve project dubbed “The Green Monster,” but we had a ways to go before it was anywhere near the “fast” category. Our homemade intake, Power Driven Diesel lift pump, and Scheid Diesel injectors (along with a timing bump to 18 degrees) had us topped out at 390rwhp, a far cry from the 134rwhp we had started from. OEM NEWS GM’S SEMICONDUCTOR CHIP SOLUTION Fresh on the heels of news that it plans to pour millions into further internal combustion engine development, GM is investing in producing semiconductor chips on U.S. soil. The automaker has entered into a long-term agreement with GlobalFoundries, a company that will manufacture for GM’s key chip suppliers at its advanced semiconductor facility in Malta, New York. The move brings a highly critical process in the production of automobiles to the U.S. With the agreement, chips will be produced in higher volumes, but are also expected to offer improved quality and predictability over current, overseas-sourced units. The road to success is paved with knowledge. We sat down with the latest winner in the Shell Rotella Truck Of The Month contest to hear his story of build it, break it, learn from it. Daman Perry first purchased the bone-stock 2003 LB7 back in 2016 when he was a full-time college student attending Iowa Central Diesel Technology. Daman recounts “When you’re in a diesel program, having a diesel truck was “cool”. I didn’t need one, but I “had to have” one to fit in”. Fellow students in the diesel program would tinker on their trucks during and after class. Daman says that’s where it all began. Going back to late 2016, GM had announced the all new L5P Duramax Diesel for the upcoming 2017 model year. That 6.6L Duramax had been completely overhauled form the current 2011-2016 LML generation with major changes both internally and externally. An all new fuel system design, new injectors, different turbocharger, different emissions equipment, it was literally all-new from the oil pan up. Along with those changes came an all new Engine Control Module (ECM) that GM considered impenetrable, so there would be no way for the aftermarket to access, reprogram, flash or make any kind of change to it. This was done for a number of reasons, but meant that the aftermarket would never be able to support performance tuning for the application, creating some major heartburn across our industry.…

R.H. Sheppard Company, of Hannover, Pennsylvania, began manufacturing diesel engines in 1937, carving out a small chunk of the diesel engine market. As with many engine manufacturers, they managed to expand considerably during World War II making a variety of products for the war effort. After the war, again like so many other manufacturers, Sheppard struggled to find a place in the post war marketplace. Their first idea was diesel repower kits for farm tractors and Sheppard briefly offered a kit for the popular International Harvester Farmall M. At the same time they began developing a line of tractors. The repower kits and the first of their tractors debuted in 1949 at about the same time. The overpriced and largely redundant repower kit soon faded away but the tractors continued.…
