On a southern crook of London’s Belgravia, people were still sitting on folding chairs in Orange Square in the late afternoon, scraping plates of rabbit in mustard sauce. The long-established bistro that sets out the chairs, La Poule au Pot, sits under the broach spire of St. Barnabas Church and in the shade of two-story-high London plane trees. When Caterina Fabrizio, the second-generation coowner of her family’s textile house, Dedar, was searching for an apartment in 2014, her main objective was simplicity. A few years prior, she had overseen an exhaustive gut renovation of her family home on Lake Como, and now, downsizing and moving to Milan with her two young sons, she wanted to “keep things light.” When she came across the groundfloor flat of a neoclassical 1930s villa, she fell in love with its double-height ceilings and generous full-length windows, but it wasn’t exactly what she’d envisioned. THE WORD LIMBO HAS MYRIAD MEANINGS, FROM RELIGIOUS TO secular, but all relate to a sense of being in between. The same goes for architectural limbos, according to Haitian-Ghanaian designer Dominique Petit-Frère. With Limbo Accra, the spatial-design studio she founded in 2018, Petit-Frère takes structures suspended in interim states and explores their creative possibility. Most of Limbo Accra’s projects, as the studio’s name suggests, are realized in the Ghanaian capital, along with other developing cities. Accra is fertile territory for Petit-Frère’s explorations: It has a rich, and troubling, architectural history (the centuries-old coastal fortresses once used for gold export and later for the enslaved immediately come to mind) and a yet-undefined modern architectural vernacular. “Most of the people building here are Ghanaian, but they carry a foreign aspiration,” Petit-Frère says.…
