Milliner Philip Treacy has been announced as one of the judges of the annual Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery, established in 2000 to promote the fine art of embroidery. Now a global competition with entries from over 40 different countries, the competition provides aspiring embroidery students and designers with an opportunity to showcase their talents. Treacy’s exquisite handcrafted sculptural headwear highlights the fantastical imagination of this quietly spoken Irishman who, for more than 30 years has created couture hats that draw admiration and surprise in equal measure. DAVID MORRISH CALLS HIMSELF a ‘disruptive designer’. A man in the traditionally female world of embroidery, he is out to shatter stereotypes, from the tattoos on his forearms to his prize-winning art. As a fashion academic at Sheffield Hallam University (winning two awards as an educator), and having finished his own MA in fashion and textiles in 2020 (with a First, distinction), he is at the ‘cutting edge’. Susan Doherty used her timber rainforest home and shed as her studio, crafting dressed small dolls out of timeworn, perhaps better described as timeravaged, fabrics and fascinating, gleefully-alighted-on oddments, each with their imagined histories, under the hypnotic gaze of an Amethystine python. ‘A python used to live in the ceiling,” she laughs, “I saw him go into a little hole once and wanted to grab him by the tail but realised that would be a bit silly.’ To understand Susan’s unusual practice, you need to familiarise yourself with the background of this Australian native and especially the surrounding geography. “From the Seychelles to Santorini, the Caribbean to Capri or places closer to home, islands have the potential to transport us to our own personal paradise…Show us your ‘glimpses of the islands’…” This was the evocative challenge set by the Embroidery Competition 2022 in association with Madeira, sponsored by Husqvarna and Embroidery magazine. The competition was judged at the Fashion and Embroidery Show at the NEC, Birmingham, on 17 March and organised by ICHF Events. The standard of entries was extremely good but one that caught both our attention and that of the visiting public was Amanda Stinton’s Glimpses of Lindisfarne. I would love to get to know you, so do please email me with your news and views. This is your magazine: it needs to reflect the diversity of its readership and the heterogeneity of textile art. So, who am I? For 14 years I was a county magazine editor. Our HQ was in a farm barn where in winter we tried to stop the mice from eating the office chocolate supply, and in summer, staff helped run our June jazz festival. CECILIA CHARLTON IS AN AMERICAN textile artist currently residing in London, who uses the regimented stitches of the bargello technique to tell both personal and universal stories. She works intuitively, the geometrics of the technique taking her to abstraction. Countering this abstraction are the titles of her works, often based in her personal life. Responding to a £10,000 commission from the biennial Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open, which gives exceptional artists the opportunity to develop their ideas, Cecilia has produced the triptych Eternal myth and the poetry of the cosmos [fate, future, suture] (2021). Holly Searle, aka The Subversive Stitcher, is a straight-talker. In fact, both she and her alterego tell it like it is, one through writing and the other through stitch. GIO SWABY IS THE FRESH young Bahamian multimedia artist whose name is on everyone’s lips right now. Fresh Up at the Museum of Fine Arts, St Petersburg, Florida is her debut solo show featuring more than 40 works created as ‘love letters to black women’. Growing up surrounded by the threads and fabrics of her seamstress mother, Swaby chooses to work in mediums traditionally associated with domesticity to imbue her work with familiarity, labour and care. She upends tradition with a sense of monumentality in the life-size series Pretty Pretty. The subjects are intricately rendered in sewn thread which is visible by showing the reverse of the canvas, its knots and loose threads. In doing so, Swaby embraces and elevates the imperfections.
