■ ROBIN MCCARTHY IS AN ARTIST with a conscience that pricks. A maker of satirical collages that raise questions about contemporary responses to racism, homelessness, gun-crime, gender, body-image and environmentalism, it’s a practice that, for McCarthy, functions as a kind of catharsis. ‘In a way it’s how I cope with what’s going on in the world.’ Quasi-surrealist, often quirky and sometimes darkly humorous, these gloriously off-beat images seem to tune into the current zeitgeist for recycled photographs and illustrations from 1940s and 1950s knitting patterns, adverts and children’s books, now ubiquitous on greetings cards and social media posts.
