100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE NO MORE!
One hundred years ago this year, Professor Abraham Izak Perold crossed Pinot Noir and Cinsaut to produce Pinotage, a grape that is as distinctively South African as biltong and pap – and just as much of an acquired taste. The rest of the world remained largely unimpressed, but that’s all changing now: Pinotage wine has improved dramatically over the years, earning recognition as a full-spectrum cultivar. It’s now also grown in Brazil, Canada, Germany, Israel, New Zealand, Switzerland and the US, but it remains distinctly South African in essence. As Anri Truter of Beyerskloof says, ‘Pinotage was born in the right country.
