THIS year will be an interesting one for rec fishing access around Australia. The long-awaited review into the Commonwealth Marine Reserves was released in September last year with a mixed response from rec fishos, commercials and green groups. After the Federal Coalition stalled the major marine park plan back in 2013, the long-winded review still suggests significant lock-outs for rec fishos in certain areas. Recs weren’t overly happy and conservationists thought the review hadn’t gone far enough. At the time of writing (January), we’re still waiting for the Government’s next move on this issue. It will be our first real indication of the current Turnbull Government’s approach to fisheries management in relation to marine parks. Will they side with the extreme environmentalist, or will a more sensible decision be made?…

FOR some years now my “go-to” line for float fishing for luderick and drummer has been Wax Dango, a bright orange float line made by Japan’s Linesystem company for targeting their sea bream using a sliding float rig – a technique known there as “specialised Dango fishing”. Wax Dango in 12lb (5.44kg) loaded on a centrepin reel has been great to use as it’s supple and tangle resistant with a diameter of 0.288mm which allows the use of fluorocarbon traces from 0.20 to 0.25mm and minimises the risk of float loss when connected to a rampaging pig or kingfish that mistakes a retrieved weed bait for a small fish. I RECENTLY built a rod for myself that I use to cover many fishing applications. This is a common request when building custom rods, but it’s often difficult to achieve. It all started while I was looking for a blank to build a light spin rod to cast small surface lures for whiting over the sand flats. The result however has been a rod that not only fills this role but has also caught me jacks, trevally and flathead while casting much bigger lures amongst the snags. The blank I’ve used is a “Venom BVH 640 - 7” which are designed and distributed by L. Wilson & Co. THIRTY local Indigenous people are now working “on country” along the Dubbo stretch of the Macquarie River thanks to innovative fundraising efforts from the Inland Waterways Rejuvenation Association (IWRA). One of the largest “work for the dole” projects ever to be rolled out in the region, the participants will be working on local reserves to remove rubbish, plant native trees and eradicate invasive weeds. CSIRO Publishing has released Rays of the World, the first illustrated guide to rays produced since the first member of the group was described by Linnaeus in 1758. It’s based on years of research by 15 authors from across the globe and covers 633 species, 25 of which were not named and described until 2016. The book has painted illustrations of each species by wildlife artist Lindsay Mitchell. Species described range in size from seven metre wide mantas and seven metre long sawfish to the electric sleeper ray, which reaches maturity at eight to 10 centimetres long. Several of the species are facing extinction, including Tasmania’s largest endemic fish, the Maugean Skate. The guide is available online from CSIRO Publishing.…

REC fishos are being warned against using uncooked imported prawns as bait follwoing the outbreak of white spot disease in Queensland’s Logan River. While White Spot Disease isn’t harmful to humans, anglers risk spreading the disease if warnings aren’t heeded. The Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources continues to work collaboratively with the Queensland Government to determine the origin of the outbreak of white spot disease in prawn farms in south-east Queensland. Deputy Secretary Lyn O’Connell said: “The department continues to investigate how this outbreak of white spot disease has occurred, but no definite link has been determined at this point.” “We are still looking at a number of pathways that may have resulted in the white spot disease incursion in Queensland, including imported feed or probiotics, contaminated…

THE MSC 2015-16 Annual Report notes that 38 more fisheries around the world have been certified as complying against environmental standards for sustainable fishing in that year, bringing the total to 236 fisheries across 36 countries. A further 92 are being assessed. 10 per cent of global wild-caught seafood is now certified, with more than 40 per cent in the Northeast Atlantic and 83 per cent in the Northeast Pacific included.
