A RECENT Fisheries Research & Development Corporation (FRDC) final report, Utilising Discards 2015-204, examines the potential to increase the use of fish currently discarded by the Great Australian Bight Trawl Sector. The sector discards, on average, 44% of its catch, including ocean leatherjackets, latchet, stingarees, dogfish, barracouta and assorted skates and rays. Jackets and latchet, both good eating species, make up about a third of the discards, and the report suggests that improved restauranteur, chef and consumer knowledge via education and publicity could lead to better acceptance and utilisation. There’s something of a silent revolution underway on our waterways these days with the extraordinary rise in the popularity of kayak fishing. Whether it’s on our estuary systems, freshwater rivers & impoundments or at many of our coastal offshore fishing hotspots you just keep seeing continually growing numbers of yak fisher’s paddling forth in search of piscatorial action. ICONIC Queensland reel manufacturer, Alvey Reels, has been saved from closure, less than a year after it announced it would be forced to close doors due to poor sales. Back in July 2017, according to an article on the ABC website, the company wrote on Facebook it would be shutting down at the end of October due to poor sales. That post went viral and sparked an influx of orders from loyal customers, allowing the fishing business to stay open a little while longer to meet demand. The orders kept coming, and Alvey delayed its closure for a second time just months later. OVER the past five decades some of our east and south coast dams have become famous for producing trophy fish. Dams like Lake Pedder, Glenbawn, Awoonga and Copeton have all produced fish that redefined “trophy” size for species including trout, bass, barra and Murray cod. There’s nothing like trophy fish to make a dam popular. These and many other waters have produced large numbers of big hungry fish that were caught by numerous lucky anglers. WESTERN Australian Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly announced the location for Exmouth’s new Integrated Artificial Reef. The new $1 million artificial reef will be one of Australia’s largest artificial reefs and will be located near the Exmouth Boat Harbour inside the Exmouth Gulf, providing the community with new safe and accessible fishing opportunities. More than 27,000 cubic metres of concrete and steel structures will be installed on the sandy bottom of the Exmouth Gulf. The project brings together world-leading engineering solutions and science-based habitat enhancement, all to benefit recreational fishing. Local WA company and world leaders in artificial reef architecture, Subcon International, received funding to develop the reef from last year’s round of the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF). While I haven’t been back there for a few years, Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory, has a magnetic attraction for those who like wilderness and remote fishing. It is a place of many contrasting landscapes, from the steep red escarpments to the lush green billabongs, the massive tidal rivers and coastal rocky headlands. The following piece is a reflective one, based on thinking about the vivid memories of fishing a wilderness that I long to return to. Arnhem Land is aboriginal land and requires permits to visit. It isn’t an easy place to access and the indigenous elders of the local communities control who has access to this area, which is one of the most isolated regions in Australia.
