BACK in 2015 the Victorian Government announced its Target 1 Million initiative. The $46 million plan involved growing rec fishing participation by 2020 through smart environmental strategies, stockings, fishing festivals, grants, kids’ fishing programs and more. How refreshing to see a Government enacting positive changes for its fishos, the fishery and the economy. Sadly it’s a different story in NSW. The NSW Government has just sold out the state’s fishers with a proposed marine park between Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong. According to NSW DPI the announcement “has a focus on ensuring the benefits of recreational fishing can continue for generations to come.” The reality, released in a series of detailed maps, shows around 25 key fishing areas locked up and out of bounds to anglers. A 10 year study by the University of Tasmania and the University of Technology, Sydney looking at 200 fish species over 544 sites across Australia concluded that on fished reefs the number of large fish had declined by 36% over the study period, as compared to marine park areas where there was either limited fishing or no-take zones. In lmited fishing zones the decline was 18%, and in no-take zones stocks remained stable. The study suggested that the main cause for decline was overfishing, with climate change also contributing. The study results, published in Aquatic Conservation were heavily criticised by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) which questioned the way in which the research scientists reached their conclusions. OVER the past 12 months I’ve had the opportunity to field test the new Ecooda Black Hawk 2 series of spin reels. In my 21 years of writing for Fisho this is the most extensive field test I’ve undertaken for the magazine. Over this time the Ecooda Black Hawk 2 - 2000 and 5000 size reels have been used as my primary work horse spin reels for all my freshwater, estuarine and inshore lure and bait fishing. During this period the reels have received the most basic of maintenance comprising a freshwater rinse to remove built up salt and grime at the end of each fishing session. Born it the Australian Alps, the River Murray is our country’s greatest body of freshwater, meandering some 2,530km to the Murray Mouth in SA. There’s something special about the river - something that’s hard to describe until you’ve spent time on the Murray. The towering redgums, golden cliffs, the vast backwaters and birdlife all culminate to make the river a very special place. THE thing about targeting snapper with soft plastics is the unpredictability of it all. Not only does water temperature, moon phase, tide and wind play a role, but you never quite know what you’ll catch next or what you’ll see out on the ocean. These days the affordability and quality of marine entertainment systems have broken down the barriers and allowed owners of boats of all shapes and sizes to enjoy music on the water. Flathead are plentiful, popular and good to eat. Normally they’re easy to catch and will strike at most lures you put in front of them. Unfortunately, through the season there are a few days when they shut down and it is hard to get a bite. THE Senate disallowance motion on the series of Commonwealth Marine Parks has been defeated. As a result, the Coalition’s sensible and balanced plans will remain in place for now. Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), the national peak body representing Australia’s commercial fishers, has welcomed news of the five failed disallowance motions against the Commonwealth Marine Park management plans. “Firstly, I would like to thank the Coalition and crossbench Senators who upheld their position of support of the plans and voted against the disallowance motions,” SIA CEO Jane Lovell said. “This is a momentous occasion for our industry – the uncertainty that has plagued much of our wildcatch sector is now gone. There’s a funny thing that happens when Aussie fishos head offshore to drop lines to the seafloor in deeper waters. There’s an almost entirely black and white, fork in the road split between fishing for sport and purely chasing a feed. Those after fillets can’t understand why fellow fishos would put in all that huff and puff battling a fish quite a distance to the surface only to let it go, while sport-focussed anglers can’t find the fun in dragging up meat from the depths. SOMETIMES you have to get out of your comfort zone and explore new things. I’m pretty happy to catch a range of species from blue marlin to flathead on my home turf, and I have always enjoyed all styles of fishing. I had a couple of memorable weekends away this past summer chasing natives in the northern Murray-Darling Basin (MDB). After each session, I’d get home and think how lucky we are as recreational fishers to have easy access to a range of iconic freshwater species; many of which don’t occur anywhere else in Australia (outside of the MDB), let alone the world. There are many threats to native fish of the MDB such as loss of habitat, altered flows and in-stream barriers like dams and weirs that stop fish from migrating and spawning. Grady White has become a well-known and respected brand in the boating world. Q What type of boat do you own and what marine electronics are onboard? I have two boats, an Edgewater 208 with twin 12-inch Evo2 Simrads, and a 17 foot Haines Hunter centre console. On that boat I have twin Simrads, a bow mount Evo2, and another Evo 2 on the console. Q What is it you like about this set up? With the bigger boat I run the twin 12-inch units in the dash. THE NSW Government has announced major changes to its rec and commerical mulloway rules. Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair, said mulloway is a highly regarded sportfish and an important commercial species. “In 2013, the NSW Government introduced a ecovery plan with a number of new rules to halt the decline of Mulloway stock and help the recovery of the species,” Blair said. “Despite efforts by fishers, a recent scientific review showed Mulloway are still overfished. “In order for stocks to recover, the review recommended that more action needed to be taken. “Given the seriousness of the issue, I asked both the commercial and recreational advisory councils to come up with actions for their sectors, with each council establishing expert working groups to investigate the best options.” The advisory councils…

For most estuary and offshore anglers dams can be tricky places to try and work out where fish will be. Superficially these “still water” impoundments appear very different to the rivers and reefs we may be familiar with, and it can be very frustrating spending fishless hours on a large freshwater impoundment.
