Armani Williams is a 20-year-old American stock car racing driver who was diagnosed with ASD at the age of two. Among his many accolades, he is the first NASCAR driver to be open about his autism diagnosis. Williams spoke his first word at the age of three. He struggled with social interaction and sensory information difficulties during childhood and was very interested in cars and watching NASCAR at a young age. You will often find the word “autism” written on Williams’ track car and suit, and he has sported blue paint schemes with the blue autism puzzle piece to raise awareness. What is Social Emotional Learning? Social emotional learning (SEL) is the process for acquiring necessary social and emotional skills for everyday success. These skills include understanding ourselves and our abilities, using self-control, setting goals, maintaining positive relationships, having empathy for others, making positive decisions, and much more. Essentially, social emotional learning skills are life skills, as these are abilities learners need in the classroom, at home, with friends, in future relationships, and beyond. What Skills are Targeted in Social Emotional Learning? There are five major domains when it comes to social emotional learning: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and decision-making skills. I will have different tasks at work. A task is a job I must complete. Once I complete a task at work, I move on to the next one. If I do not know how to do a task, it is expected that I ask for help. I can say “I do not understand. Will you explain how to do it again?” Others will not know I do not understand unless I say something. I cannot sit and wait. Once I finish a task, I move on to the next one. If I do not know what to do next, I ask my manager or boss “What should I do next?” I listen carefully and use a visual task list to help me remember.
