A woman in Argentina was busted when it was revealed that her late-pregnancy baby bump was in fact nine pounds of weed. The arrest took place at a police checkpoint in Uco Valley, just south of Mendoza, when cops found two bricks of pot in her bag and another 15 bricks in her faux tummy, which police said was made out of paste. The bus on which she and her companion (who also had a couple bricks on him) were busted was headed to the southern province of Santa Cruz. End the Drug War I am a retired LEO (law enforcement officer). After spending more than 28 years as a street officer, I have observed firsthand the waste of time and money spent trying to stem the flood of recreational marijuana. I believe that marijuana is not a “gateway” drug. The true gateway drug is legal and easily accessible alcohol. I never had to fight someone high on weed, but almost always had to fight with individuals intoxicated on alcohol. Evanston, IL, will earmark tax revenue derived from the brand-new legal-pot market to fund a local reparations program. Sales of recreational weed in Illinois began in January, and this Chicago suburb will be using all of the resultant sales tax to support job training and other benefits designed to help the city’s black population. “We can implement funding to directly invest in black Evanston,” Alderman Robin Rue Simmons, who represents the Fifth Ward and proposed the reparations bill, told the Chicago Tribune. Simmons said that since so many black residents were victims of the War on Drugs, it was only fitting that the new legal system redress at least some of that injustice. In December, when the great state of Michigan became the ninth in the nation to allow adults to buy recreational marijuana, one of its first customers was John Sinclair, the legendary activist and poet. Sinclair was 28 years old in 1969 when he was arrested for (allegedly) giving a couple of joints to an undercover cop. When Kristi Noem, governor of South Dakota, introduced the state’s new campaign to fight drug abuse, not everyone appreciated the genius of the campaign’s tagline: “Meth: We’re On It.” The campaign depicts South Dakotans of all ages and types—on posters, billboards and video clips—declaring, “I’m on meth.” Even Noem herself appears in a clip, saying, “This is our problem, and we need to get on it.” The campaign, which reportedly cost the state about half a million dollars, inspired unkind ridicule on social media, but even mocking tweets helped raise awareness of the issue, which in South Dakota is bleak.
