Former President Bill Clinton publicly apologized to Mexico for US involvement in Mexico’s Drug War, which has killed over 120,000 people since 2006, with another 27,000 missing. Speaking in Mexico City, Clinton admitted: “I wish you had no narco-tra›icking, but it’s not really your fault. Basically, we [the US] did too good of a job of taking the transportation out of the air and water, and so we ran it over land. I apologize for that.” Clinton was referring to US prohibition policies that essentially pushed the tra›icking from other countries into Mexico. Since 2008, the US has spent $3 billion fighting the Mexican Drug War. In defiance of US Attorney Melinda Haag, a federal judge has allowed the Berkeley Patients Group to continue serving medical pot patients, pending a ruling by the courts on whether the city of Berkeley can sue Haag. The US attorney has repeatedly attempted to shut down BPG since 2011, first for being too close to schools. Even after BPG relocated across town, the vindictive Haag sought to seize the dispensary’s property in 2013 because marijuana is federally illegal. Her actions appear to disregard the Obama administration’s instructions that federal prosecutors are not to interfere with state marijuana laws.…

Colorado officials announced that the state took in $44 million in tax revenues from recreational pot in 2014. The figure is well below the estimated projections for the first year of pot sales, which ranged as high as $100 million. However, those projections were a shot in the dark. Including medical cannabis taxes and industry fees, Colorado garnered a total of $76 million from pot last year. Despite the lower-than-anticipated haul, it may have to refund some of the cash due to a state amendment restricting government spending and requiring any new voter-approved taxes (such as those generated by legal weed) to be returned to residents if the overall state taxes rise higher than sanctioned by law. Legalized pot is no longer a dream. Anyone who visited Colorado and Washington State in 2014 got a glimpse of the green wave now sweeping the nation. For veterans of the marijuana-law reform movement, a discussion of the real-world effects of cannabis legalization was always abstract, since there were no hard numbers available to make a cogent case for “tax and regulate” versus prohibition. Today, however, consumer and business advocates for legalization have an abundance of economic, criminal-justice and public-safety data to buttress their pro-reform arguments. The Canadian government has recalled a strain of medical marijuana—not because of toxins or mold, but because the pot was too potent. Peace Naturals Project of Ontario voluntarily recalled its Nyce N’ EZ strain after a Health Canada inspection and subsequent third-party testing revealed the THC level to be as high as 13.7 percent. (The strain’s label lists it at 9.07 percent.) Health Canada claims that high THC levels may increase the risk of “adverse effects.” However, Nyce N’ EZ registered at just half the THC content of some of the strongest strains available these days. Not surprisingly, there have been no reported negative incidents with anyone consuming the pot. Retired federal judge Paul Cassell says he regrets imposing a 55-year sentence on Weldon Angelos, who was just 24 when he was incarcerated for selling pot in 2004. Cassell says he was forced to hand down the hefty punishment due to mandatory-minimum sentencing laws spawned by the War on Drugs in the 1980s. Angelos, once an aspiring music producer in Salt Lake City, was busted for selling $1,000 worth of cannabis to an undercover informant in three separate deals. The narc claimed that Angelos was carrying a firearm during the sales, which caused them to fall under the mandatory-minimum laws. The state also stacked the charges against Angelos, meaning each of the three pot deals was prosecuted as a separate violation. By law, Angelos had to be sentenced as a…

A 2015 study issued by the National Highway Tra›ic Safety Administration found that drivers with a 0.05 percent blood-alcohol level were nearly seven times more likely to be involved in a crash than those driving under the influence of marijuana, most other illegal drugs and/or prescription medications. Adjusting the “Drug and Alcohol Crash Risk” results for age, gender, race and the presence of alcohol, pot-using motorists were found to be no more likely to cause an accident than those driving completely sober. The results help bolster the argument that using the blood-alcohol-content model for marijuana is a ridiculous way to determine impairment. Lebanon’s Hash Valley Takes Up Arms Against ISIS Reporting from the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon’s hashish heartland, on January 5, Public Radio International spoke with cannabis farmers who say they’re ready to fight any ISIS incursion into their region. Ali Nasri Shamas, who runs a hashish factory in Bouday village, took up arms in 2007 to resist the Lebanese government’s cannabis-eradication forces. This effort paid off, since the army didn’t return again until 2012. Pot Causes Drought Colorado has a serious water shortage, and recreational pot is being scapegoated. In reality, the problem stems from decades of a poorly planned water policy called the “Colorado Doctrine,” which has resulted in western Colorado holding 70 percent of the state’s water, with just 11 percent of the population. A serious drought in the West linked to climate change—not legal pot—also impacts water supply. Pot and Lung Cancer The old “one joint equals a pack of cigarettes” argument has been thoroughly discredited. In the Netherlands this winter, police unveiled their latest technique for detecting illegal pot gardens indoors: They look for roofs with melted snow. Back in February, the cops raided a residence in Haarlem, a city west of Amsterdam, after noticing its roof was the only one on the block not covered in snow. The bare roof suggested that the apartment contained an abnormal number of lights, and that was all the probable cause needed to raid the house. Once inside, officers discovered snow-melting heat lamps on an industrial scale being used to cultivate an undisclosed number of plants.
