After working in the film industry for years, Rosalind Nale and her husband Grant made the move to the tranquil village of Stanford in the Overberg in 2009. Originally the First Apostolic Church, their new home consisted of a barn-style building and separate cottage. The exterior of the barn was left in its original form, as were the ceilings, while interior walls were removed and a bathroom added. Q: Can I apply lime to my roses? They’ve been in the same beds for about five years and the leaves are yellow. In most regions in South Africa, no additional lime is required – especially when fertilising with Vigorosa, which contains sufficient lime to harden the cell walls. If the leaves are yellow but the veins are still green, this is known as chlorosis. It often occurs when the soil is very compact and hard, which prevents the uptake of iron by the roots because of a lack of oxygen in the soil. Gardening tips for November • Keep soil moist where seedlings are planted until they’re established. Water shrubs and lawns thoroughly once a week and make sure that plants in outdoor containers are watered regularly. • Conserve moisture in the soil and discourage weeds from germinating by spreading a thick layer of mulch, leaving space around the stem. • Continue planting carrots, beetroot, peppers, tomatoes, sweetcorn and courgettes. Spread straw or pine bark as a mulch between rows of veggies. • Stake tall-growing perennials to the tips of each flower spike to avoid breaking in wind and heavy rain. • Pinch back fuchsias to encourage side shoots and more flowers.
