Against a minimally framed glass wall on one side, this open-tread structure, designed by architecture practice Cousins & Cousins, is made from a curved patinated steel sheet with a leather handrail and timber treads. ‘The shape and materials contrast sharply with the crisp white walls, making the staircase the focal point in this period house,’ says the practice’s co-founder Ben Cousins. AS lightbulb moments go, the one that prompted the design of the Aga cooker was rather prescient. The cooker was designed in 1922 by Gustaf Dalén, a Swedish physicist who won the Nobel Prize for inventing the first automated flashing beacon for lighthouses, but was then blinded by chemicals when a bulb he was testing exploded. Recuperating at home, Dalén realised how much time and physical effort his wife, Elma, spent feeding fuel into their range. He set out to design a model that incorporated two hotplates and two ovens. They worked at pre-set temperatures, allowing a variety of dishes to be cooked at the same time at lower or higher temperatures according to the ingredients. PROJECT As part of a total renovation of their four-storey townhouse, built in 1840, interior designer Robert Moore and his partner, Jonathan Beak, chose to convert two drawing rooms on the first floor into a master bedroom suite. LAYOUT The first step was to create an opening between the two rooms. ‘We did think of adding double doors, but prefer to enjoy the natural light flowing through the large sash windows at the front and back of the house,’ says Robert. Twenty years ago, Lucy and Ernest van Vredenburch made the decision to move from London back to the east coast where they had both grown up.
