Amodest bedroom redesign was the initially proposed project when interior designer Ryan Lawson first visited his client Kathy Robins. Ryan had made the trip with his boyfriend, furniture dealer Sean Robins, to see the house where he grew up and Sean’s mother Kathy quickly saw an opportunity to employ Ryan’s interior design skills. ‘When I got there, Kathy asked me to rearrange the furniture in her bedroom, which rapidly escalated to us both walking round the house with a legal pad talking about moving walls and changing lighting,’ Ryan recalls. That was the feeling at the judging day for this year’s Homes & Gardens Awards, where our team of industry experts met virtually to discuss the merits of dozens of designers and creative stars, all nominated by the panel themselves. Q When did you become interested in gardening? I grew up in Siena inside the medieval city walls. The colours of the stucco façades, terracotta roof tiles and mellow brickwork had a strong influence on me. Then I moved to the countryside and discovered I liked plants. When it comes to the objects displayed in her home, designer Juniper Tedhams is both a collector and, by her own admission, ‘a ruthless editor’. ‘I like to have space around things,’ she explains. This instinct to strip back rather than endlessly add has served her well in this Manhattan townhouse, where she lives with her husband, lighting designer Sean O’Connor. Situated at the northernmost tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown has long harboured a resident population of artists who were first attracted to the fishing village by its extraordinary elemental light. This former studio was built by seascape painter Frederick Judd Waugh and was later used by Hans Hofmann, a key figure in abstract expressionism and one of the most prominent characters of post-war American art. ‘Recent events have proved that working from home is not just possible but can be very productive,’ says architect John Pardey, whose Hampshire-based practice works on a range of residential projects. As with many architects, home offices or studies have often been a part of his work but are not necessarily a given – something that has changed since the pandemic. WALL OF CHINA Displays of antique china have long been a popular way of showing off a treasured collection – and it’s far more enjoyable than keeping it shut away in a cupboard. KEY DECISIONS Luke Thomas, design director at John Cullen Lighting, advises that in order to create depth in a scheme, deciding what to leave in darkness is just as important as making a decision on what is lit up. If we were to light all aspects of a feature, for example a topiary box ball, the look would fall flat, but lighting just one side creates a striking contrast. ZONED OUT Over the years, side returns of Victorian houses have typically been incorporated into the kitchen, but why not hive off a section and convert it into a private workspace instead? Home offices do not need to be vast to be functional – especially if they have an outlook that gives the illusion of greater space, such as a large picture window, and are flooded with natural light. THE CERAMICIST Lydia Hardwick creates bold, beautiful designs from her home studio Q How do you work? With a range of techniques, because I think it is important for my practice to move freely between different approaches. My pots are mostly coiled and decorated with slips. My plates and wall-pieces are often inlaid. This involves staining clay different colours using oxides, rolling the colours out flat, and collaging cut-out shapes together, pressing them to create a flat surface. Q Where do find inspiration? LAST YEAR, when the cutting-edge Frieze London art fair included a special section dedicated to female weavers in its programme, one thing was clear: craft, long dismissed by the art world as folksy and inferior, was finally in a league of its own. Certainly investment in craft is now big business – in its recent report The Market for Craft, the Crafts Council estimated it to be worth £3 billion in the UK. IT WAS in 2010, after learning that Angraves (England’s last remaining rattan weaving workshop) was due to close its doors forever, that Lulu Lytle, co-founder of Soane Britain, decided to step in to help bring the weavers’ expertise to a new audience. ROAST POTATOES WITH SAUTÉED BEANS AND PEAS SERVES 4 400g potatoes 400g purple potatoes 2 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg 200g green beans 6 spring onions 200g peas 1 tbsp salted butter Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas 4. Scrub all the potatoes, cut them in half and mix with the olive oil, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Place on a baking tray and roast for 40 minutes. GROWING UP in north London, Evi Antonio’s yearnings for nature were satiated by the images in early natural history books. Fascinated by the detailed pictorials, she was never without her own sketchbook and pencils. A degree in scientific and natural history illustration from Middlesex University and a career as a natural history illustrator followed before a move to Ware in Hertfordshire, where she ran a successful illustration agency with her husband from their studio on the Amwell Nature Reserve.
