TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. Born into an itinerant army family, I grew up in Alabama, Ireland, Germany and only came to England when sent to school here. I had little creative input, but I loved the few carpentry lessons I ever did, and at the age of 10 asked my parents if I could convert our coal shed into a workshop. EVEN the smallest outdoor space can become a beautifully designed garden. The key is to keep things simple and fuss-free. Limit landscaping materials, such as paving and decking, to no more than a couple of styles and select a pared-down colour palette. Use the concept of the ‘slow reveal’, too. If you can’t see all your garden at once, it creates a sense of space as you’re not sure what lies around a corner. The sash window is a technological masterpiece. In the summer, with top and bottom sash drawn to the middle, it is the perfect ventilation device for a room with cool air coming in the low opening and warm air leaving through the top. After seven years of living with minimal furnishings and white walls, Dominic, a barrister, realised that his Islington flat would benefit from some considered decorating. Prompted by the desire to fill his home with colour and character, a friend pointed him in the direction of the interior designer Kate Guinness who undertook the job along with Jess Denyer, contributing her expertise as lead designer. ‘When we first saw the flat, the space was very impersonal with few furnishings. TRY LARGE POTS AND PLANTERS The bigger they are, the better their impact will be as this will give your plants room to thrive and you’ll have less watering to do. Big statement pots give you a real focal point and that sense of lush greenery en masse. Use matching materials for the containers, or at least materials and colours that complement each other. WORKING WITH COLOUR ‘Entrance halls should make a statement about the house and owners as well as being a welcoming space. Small spaces can be treated in a grand way – “be bold” is my advice. Large details can open up the space, such as using double doors but making them as tall as possible. A pair of facing mirrors helps create the illusion of more space and adds a bit of glamour.
