• One of the easiest ways to update a room is to paint a wall in one bold colour. The big DIY and homes stores sell their own paints now and often have colours that will match the more expensive brands. Use tester pots first to check a colour suits the room and don’t forget: it doesn’t have to be forever. • Save colourful, patterned wallpaper for a feature wall. Too much and it could be difficult to live with, but on the right wall, it can have a transformative effect and with the self-adhesive styles available now, it’s much easier to hang it yourself. • Think carefully about what tones go together. Clashing colours can be great, but if you want big blocks of colour, pair them with more…

You will need * Patterned paper * White card * Glue gun * Sticky foam pads * Wire lampshade frame 1 Cut out different-sized circles from your patterned paper. For a neater result, find some circular items of different sizes, such as jar lids, cups and drinking glasses, place them on the paper and use them as templates to draw around before cutting out the circles. 2 Cut a piece of white card to fit around the lampshade frame. Layer the circles onto the card so that they overlap one another. Layer the paper circles with the larger ones covering the base, then use the smaller circles to fill in gaps on top. You will need * Double duvet cover made from natural fibres * Four litres of soya milk * Water * Yellow onion skins * Strong cotton string * Rope * Large stock pot * Two buckets * Sieve * Clothes pegs * Plastic sheet 1 Wash the duvet cover, then let it soak in a bucket filled with the soya milk and 20 litres of cool water for 12 hours. Remove the cover, squeeze out the liquid and hang it up to dry in the shade. Once it’s dry, immerse it in the soya milk mixture again for a few minutes. Again, squeeze out the liquid and hang the fabric out to dry. Repeat this step once more and then store the cover in a cool dry place for…

• Prepare the floor by sweeping it thoroughly. Once that’s done, check the condition of the floorboards. If any are damaged, you’ll need to replace them with reclaimed boards of a similar type of wood and colour. Make sure all boards are secure and that all gaps between the boards are filled in. • You’ll need to hire a professional sanding kit, including a drum, edging and corner sander. Seal doors to the room with plastic sheeting so that the dust stays in that room and doesn’t travel. • Wearing protective gear, sand the floor diagonally with the drum sander. • Renovating and decorating a house is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time and everything will work out fine. • Don’t panic buy anything. Wait until you find the perfect pieces or else you’ll end up spending double when you realise you aren’t satisfied with the substitute item. • It goes without saying, but be very vigilant when hiring contractors. Look through their previous work and get references whenever you can. It’ll save you a lot of time, expense, stress and heartache. • It’s amazing what a bit of upcycling can do. Give your plants an Insta-worthy home by transforming the look of their plain, old pots. A bit about me I’m Sarah Haigh and I live in a four-bedroom semi-detached house in West Yorkshire with my husband, Darryl and our children, Elsie, 10, and Woody, five. How did it all begin? Nine years ago I left my job in the City to become an artist – ideally not an impoverished one! I also began designing homewares from my art and very soon I had a fully-fledged brand. • The internet is your friend, both for design and practical help. You can be inspired by the millions of images out there or learn to do anything via online videos if you’re ready to give it a go. • Don’t be scared of change. If you put something up, enjoy it while you like it and change it when you don’t. • Unusual-shaped tiles, like our hexagon designs in the bathroom, will take longer to lay so you’ll spend more on labour. Also, make sure your tiler has the same vision as you. Although I’d drawn out a rough sketch of how I wanted the tiles to go part way up the wall, when they were laid every corner looked bizarre as the cuts created a little triangle. • Don’t make rash decisions. Living room ‘Our home has so much character, from the coving details to the high ceilings and the big windows. We’re very lucky!’ Kate has used a mix of grey, pink and cream in the living room, along with a variety of plants, in order to create a homely look in here. ‘Our living room is such a bright space, with so much personality,’ she says. The white walls and stripped-back sanded floorboards provide a plain canvas to show off carefully chosen pieces of furniture. • Creating your ideal home is a long process! Even now, I still have a few odd jobs on my DIY to-do list. • Living in your home for a while before you start any renovations is important. It really helps you get a feel for the space in each room and how you want to utilise them. You will need * 13cm embroidery hoop * 9cm square tile * 6m of 5mm cotton cord * Glue gun * Sharp scissors 1 Unscrew the embroidery hoops and spread them open so the space in between matches the width of the tile. 2 Use the glue gun to secure the top of the hoops together, then glue the corners of the tile to the bottom of the hoops. 3 Cut a 2m length of cord (you may need more depending on the height of the surface you intend on hanging the planter from). 4 Using your glue gun, add some glue to one end of the cord and press it onto one side of the hoop screw. Go green Leafy plants were the last piece of the styling jigsaw after Sarah had hung the botanical blind. ‘I bought a faux fern and it wasn’t really meant for the bathroom,’ she says. ‘On a whim, I put it in here and instantly loved the way the greenery brought the room to life. You will need * Slingback armchair * Piece of leather to fit your chair * Craft knife * Staple gun 1 Carefully remove the old fabric from the chair. 2 Cut the leather to the length of the old fabric, adding an extra 7.5cm at both ends to give you enough to fold over the chair’s rails. 3 Fold the leather over the top and bottom chair rails and use a staple gun to secure both ends in place. Top tip You don’t have to use leather for your chair if you don’t want to. Other materials, such as mud cloth or a tufted rug, would also work well.…

Over the rainbow We live in a quirky cottage in the east of Fife in Scotland there aren’t two rooms in it that are the same shape or size! I have eclectic taste and love to play with colour. My youngest children share a room and when the time came to decorate it they asked for something bright and colourful, so I used a colour-blocking technique, focusing on mustard, green and pink shades.
