One of the things most people consider in selecting a used car is to make certain that the engine is sound, but for hot rodders, this is often much less of a concern. Baer Racing will run two vehicles long-distance this year. Adjunct to our discovery that a stock Lightning can truly breathe down the neck of a Corvette, and that its power has been under-advertised, we have some details on the upcoming 2001½ Lightning. H-E-M-I. Elusive. Persuasive. Legendary. These qualities have created a performance legend that DaimlerChrysler is banking on for the new century. The name, of course, was derived from the hemispherical combustion chambers, and more importantly, from spark plug wires poking tHR0ugh the center of the valve covers, giving the Elephant an appearance unlike any other engine (save for the ancient Ardun conversion). Maybe we were a little premature in thinking that the NMCA racers would jump at the chance to field a bunch of “newstalgia” Streeters or pull their old cars out of the mothballs and bring them up to speed to take advantage of the much-revised rules for the 2000 season. LS1 Has 400+ Horsepower Potential… So Where Is It? Word is that the LS1 isn’t even breathing hard at its current 345hp level. Four hundred emissions-legal horsepower are said to be no problem, and there are reports of 450+ horsepower utilizing stock electronics, throttle body and intake (see Juicing the Gen III, Oct. ’98). So what’s the holdup? The good news is that it’s not fear of insurance regulations. The bad news is that GM may be holding itself back. It seems that The General fears the wrath of Corvette ZR1 owners. When these cars were built (1990-95), the engines produced from 385 to 405 hp, and were marketed as the ultimate Corvette. Indications point to a phasing down of the division’s operations—at least in management’s eyes, even though Mercury will soon have the strongest lineup it’s offered in years… and sales continue to rise. There have been countless debates on MAP versus MAF, and whether an aftermarket engine controller such as DFI is necessary. We d like to set the record straight. Undoubtedly, the most accurate method of determining the load on the engine is by measuring the mass of the incoming air. Air reacts in the manner of a gas and expands and contracts when heated and cooled This affects the density of the oxygen molecules and the amount of fuel the engine would need to consume all of that oxygen.
