“I’M ALWAYS looking through decades-old magazines, trying to figure out what stands the test of time—and doesn’t make you go ‘ugh!’ today,” says 38-year-old Sarah Bartholomew. Her interest in architecture began in a childhood spent exploring the storied homes of her native Virginia, from Mount Vernon to Montpelier— and, yes, taking notes. Craving outdoor space for grilling and gardening, designer Laurie Blumenfeld-Russo and her husband, Bob Russo, considered buying a weekend place in Connecticut. Instead, the couple went vertical, turning the roof of their brownstone into a multiseason entertaining oasis. CAMERON SCHWABENTON: Many historic homes in Charleston started out as urban plantations, and the lots were subdivided over time. This house was originally a kitchen house, one of several outbuildings to the 1772 main home next door, which is owned by my client, John Dewberry.
