It’s a certain mystique that springs from the stories it holds, something not readily found in new builds. Architectural details, unrivaled molding, hardwood doors, and woodburning fireplaces draw us in. But there’s a cold, hard reality that comes with a century-old abode—outdated electrical systems, windowless rooms, walls that a single nail can crumble. Fixing those defects can be overwhelming but totally worth it. For House Beautiful’s Sixth Annual Whole Home, the editors went all in, heading to the beautiful, 150-year-old village of Hinsdale, Illinois. Colordrunk Designs @colordrunk_designs THE ORIGINAL: This oval room had hand-painted wall art, four entry points—and no windows. THE UPGRADE: Designer Jenna Gross envisioned the dining room as a place for year-round gatherings that could range from relaxed to formal, with guests mingling around the working fireplace. Highgloss, chinoiserie-inspired blue paint on the trim and ceiling makes the historic murals pop. White cerused pedestal tables (with a nearly indestructible finish) don’t require a tablecloth and brighten up the windowless room. The center tête-à-tête captures the walls’ bright color palette in a cheerful floral fabric with vibrant cobalt trim, while the crimson-red upholstered fireplace fender invites guests to linger over a digestif on cold nights. Society Social @societysocial THE ORIGINAL: This spare room had great wall paneling but obnoxious radiator boxes. THE UPGRADE: “We wanted this to be a mix of traditional-meets-youthful and feminine,” designer Roxy Owens of Society Social says. For inspiration, she turned to textile brand Lee Jofa, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. Upon learning that one of her favorite patterns—Chinese Peony, pulled from a mid-19th-century English chintz—had been recolored and introduced as a fabric and wallpaper, Owens made the floral motif the centerpiece of this most dreamy room. She painstakingly ensured that the pattern flowed seamlessly across the wall panels and canopied bed (otherwise, she remarks, the room would be “very trippy” and not relaxing at all). Emma Beryl @emmaberyl THE ORIGINAL: Off the swimming pool, this rec room of sorts was covered in blue and white tile and faux marble—and had a structural column smack in the middle. THE UPGRADE: Given the seven-foot-tall ceilings, designer Emma Beryl had to dream up how to maximize the odd, lower-level space. She imagined “a very smart, very cool woman everyone wants to know” hosting long dinners that become raucous afterparties, and decided to create a party room with the allure of a late-night lounge. To do so, Beryl used a warm, paprika-colored paint on the ceiling and trim (noting the red becomes a “neutral” if used in abundance) and papered key areas in a paisley, starburst kaleidoscope. THE UPGRADE: Inspired by the home’s history, designers Marita Simmons and Krysta Gibbons of Kipling House decided to make herstory. “Based on the room’s location, we assumed it was the original ‘gentlemen’s cigar room,’” Simmons says. “And we wanted to create a place for the modern woman to retreat to after a long week of doing all the things,” Gibbons explains. They painted the walls a deep purple, inspired by a floral Pierre Frey fabric that contains a subtle hint of aubergine, then offset the hue with the custom peacock-blue banquette and Roman shades. Design Alchemy @shopdesignalchemy THE ORIGINAL: This window-filled addition, dating to a previous renovation, maximized the views of the garden but included an unattractive HVAC bump-out and a dated circular column—which could not be removed without the ceiling collapsing. THE UPGRADE: Design team Deborah Costa and Kristine Renee went full throttle to hide the ugly and embrace the beauty. After learning about memorable gatherings in this home, they knew music would need to be a major theme, so they filled the space with rhythm and flow—and a piano! The designers added impactful color and got creative with the room’s less-desirable features, making every previous decision seem intentional. A wall of cabinetry hits several high notes: concealing ductwork, adding storage, and camouflaging an interior window. And that unsightly column was squared up…

Gray Space Interiors @grayspaceinteriors THE ORIGINAL: The multiroom space encompassed a hallway, bedroom, and lounge—and had shamrock-print wall-to-wall carpet. THE UPGRADE: It’s now a Zen cocoon that lets guests’ imaginations take flight. “Butterflies are my spirit animal,” designer Rasheeda Gray says. “They symbolize renewal, growth, and evolution.” It’s no surprise, then, that the Aflutter wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries, depicting butterfly wings en masse, inspired her to design this entire space as the designated “anti-hustle” corner of the house. Now, from the moment guests enter the hallway, the environment is whimsical and relaxing, restorative and peaceful, and aglow in pinks and ambers. DESIGNER ALISON Newman’s first project as she set out on her own after working with Juan Montoya Design was ambitious—and unusual. Clients Rima Farah, from a family of storied jewelers, and Olivier Lordonnois, a hotelier managing Manhattan’s Aman, share an eye for beauty. They craved a casual yet elegant English-inspired country home with rich colors and patterns—but everything had to be durable enough to bring their eight rescue animals indoors when they weren’t roaming the hills of Millbrook, New York. “Animals are Rima’s passion; she needed a safe place for them to thrive,” Newman explains. The homeowners’ nonprofit, Happy Farm Animal Rescue, has saved many from livestock auctions.
